Donald Taylor Obituary

Donald Taylor PITTSBORO, NC - 1/19/1925-1/16/2017 Donald Taylor, 91, of Pittsboro NC passed away peacefully from natural causes the morning of January 16, 2017 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Don and his beloved wife Millie were married for almost 64 years and moved to Galloway Ridge at Fearrington Village in 2006. He was born in Ardmore, South Dakota as one of 11 children and left home at an early age. Don made his way to Alaska where he graduated from Ketchikan High School in 1944 and received his Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from the University of Oregon in 1952, the only child in his family to graduate from college. He put himself through college by working in the salmon industry and then, after graduation, took an Accounting position with Nakat Packing, the salmon canning division of A&P Supermarkets. Don spent 15 summers at different Alaska cannery locations keeping the books, then returned to his family in Seattle when the season was over in September. Don left the fishing industry to become Project Controller for an expansion of the Intalco Primary Aluminum Smelter in Ferndale WA in 1968. He was transferred to other Alumax-partnered locations including San Mateo CA, Frederick, MD and back to Ferndale WA through the 1970's. His last project was construction of the all-new, state-of-the-art Alumax/Alcoa/now Century Mt. Holly Primary Aluminum Smelter in Goose Creek SC. He was Project Controller from plant concept and build-out in the late 1970's through startup in 1980 and continued on as Controller when production began in 1980 until his retirement as Vice President in 1995. He lived with his wife in their Summerville, SC home until moving to Galloway in 2006. Don is survived by his wife Millie, 2 children- Jim (Andrea) and Carol Hearne, along with one brother (Marvin). A memorial service was held at Galloway Ridge on January 22. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

Please accept my condolences on the death of Mr. Taylor. I only learned of it today. I was an employee in the Accounting Dept of Alumax, and then Alcoa. My husband, Les, and I are sorry to hear of your loss.
