David Shuler Obituary

David Luther Shuler, Jr. MT. PLEASANT - David Luther Shuler, Jr., 92, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, of entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 22, 2025. His Celebration of life service will be held at The USS Yorktown at a later date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Northwoods Chapel. David was born May 3, 1932, in Salisbury, North Carolina, son of the late David Luther Shuler and the late Ruby Griffin Shuler. He grew up playing baseball and football and stealing ice chips off of a horse drawn ice delivery wagon until one day, at age 7, he was caught and arrested and taken to jail and locked up for 30-minutes. The arresting officer, his own father who later became the Chief of Police and for whom the police department is named, wanted him to learn a good lesson. Throughout his life, he stayed in touch with his schoolmates and friends. He kept a lifelong friendship with his high school baseball coach, Joe Ferebee, and they last visited when he and Coach were 85 and 100 years old, respectively. After a stint in the Army and graduating from The Citadel, he married Pat in 1959. Work with Ford Motor Company took the family from Charlotte, NC, to Michigan and back to the Carolinas in 1979. After retirement in 1995, he began volunteering on the Yorktown and he loved it. The extraordinary volunteer group transformed his days. In the 30-years he volunteered, he found fellowship and fulfillment each time he was on the ship. He loved being part of living history but he really loved the other volunteers as well as meeting and getting to know new people who'd come to visit from all around the world. He and his good friend and neighbor, Beth Clarey, enjoyed meals and fellowship with each other in recent years. Beth is an extraordinary lady and her commitment is unwavering. She has adopted Dave's cat, Norman, to provide him a loving home. He loved his grandson, Walt; and his granddaughters, Hailey and Emily; and his grandson-in-law, Brendan,; and he thought his great-granddaughters, Eloise and Georgia, were fantastic and funny and smart. He loved how they made him laugh and he talked about them endlessly. He is survived by two sons: Gregory Reed Shuler (Larky) of Summerville, SC, and Philip David Shuler of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren: Walter Shuler, Hailey Gilbert (Brendan) of Summerville, and Emily Shuler (Blake Eidson) of Huger, SC; two great-grandchildren: Eloise and Georgia. He was preceded in death by his late wife, Patricia Reed Shuler; and parents, David and Ruby Shuler. Memorials may be made to USS Yorktown Foundation, EIN: 46-1892486. Dave was a great friend and wonderful volunteer at Patriots Point. I began volunteering there in 2021, and when I went in for my interview, the flight simulator operator needed folks to test the ride. Dave and I offered to be the testers. By the end of the ride, I was nauseated and he wasn't fazed. I will miss his wisdom and kindness. His absence is felt!
