David Askins Obituary

David Glenburn Askins, Jr. CHARLESTON - Dr. David Glenburn Askins, Jr., age 76, of Charleston, died May 1, 2011, after a courageous battle with bladder cancer. He died peacefully at his home and was surrounded by his family. He was born November 2, 1934, in Florence, SC, and was the son of the late Irma Lewis Askins and David G. Askins, Sr. Dr. Askins was a graduate of Wofford College and the Medical University of South Carolina. After completing his internship and residency in family medicine, he returned to his hometown of Marion, SC to practice family medicine with the Marion Medical Group of Berry, Askins, and Suggs. He was a member of the SC, Marion, and Charleston Medical Associations, and the American Academy of Family Physician. In 1975, he was President of the South Carolina Heart Association. Dr. Askins served as the Chairman of the Department of Clinical Services and was the Senior Medical Advisor of the Physician Assistant Program at MUSC. After his retirement in 2008, he was Interim Program Director of the Physician Assistant Division at the University of New England in Portland, Maine. Throughout his career, Dr. Askins was an active member of his community. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion and served on their Board of Trustees. He also took a keen interest in the education of the students in Marion County and served on the School Board and was the Board Chairman from 1966-1979 and Chairman of the Committee for Elections of School Boards for Marion County. He frequently would offer his words of wisdom when teaching his patients, families and students, but will most be remembered by leading others by his gentle example. In addition to the local education of Marion, he offered his services on a broader level by being a member and chairman of the SC Commission of Higher Education (1987-1994), chairman of the Committee on Health and Medical Education (1987-1988), and chairman of the Committee on Planning Assessment (1989-1993). His honors include Distinguished Service Award, American Heart Association 1976; Marion Citizen of the Year, 1976; nominated, Health Sciences Foundation Teaching Excellence Award, 2002; recipient, Health Sciences Foundation "Clinician of the Year" Award, 2002. He served on many MUSC committees and was the author of numerous publications. Dr. Askins spent as much time as he could at his beachhouse "Lahaina" in Garden City, SC, where he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He continued his teaching of others even while on vacation by demonstrating the best way to shrimp and troll for Spanish mackerel. His family and friends were the center of his being, and he will be long remembered by his love and generosity to all that he encountered. Dr. Askins is survived by his wife, Jeanie Smithey Askins; his three children, Judy Askins and her partner Monte Andrews of Stone Mountain, GA; David Askins, III and his wife Gailya of Summerville, SC; Kelly Askins and her partner Sharon Simpkins of Raleigh, NC; and their mother, Nancy Askins of Marion; his wife's children, Brad Stroud and his wife Jillian of St Petersburg, FL, Lori Stroud and her partner, Spencer Tackett of Marion, SC; and his grandchildren, David Askins, IV, Chris Askins, Rebecca Askins, Hailey Stroud, Caitlyn Stroud, Allison Stroud and Paisley Stroud-Tackett. Dr. Askins family would like to offer thanks to the many wonderful friends and the caring staff of Lutheran Hospice for their kindness and compassion throughout his illness. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 3, from 4-7 p.m., at his home, 2364 Eades Lane, Charleston, SC 29414; and on Wednesday, May 4, from 4-7 p.m., at Richardson Funeral Home, 1936 Senator Gasque Road, Marion, SC 29571 (phone: 843-423-5100). David and Gay,
I was very sorry to hear of Dr. Askins' passing. He was a joy and pleasure to work with in the days of doing the pacemaker clinics in Marion. It was a priviledge to have known him. May the Good Lord comfort you, as only He can.

I was so honored to have the priviledge to sing a final goodbye to Uncle Glenn. I have never known him to be anything but a sweet, soft spoken, and kind man. Aunt Jeanie when you looked at him your entire face lit up. I love you both...and will forever hold his memory in my heart.

I met Dr. Askins when he served as Chairman of the Department of Clinical Services and Senior Medical Advisor of the Physician Assistant Program at MUSC. We shared a common interest in the education of MUSC's students, and we were involved in the first interprofessional educational activity at MUSC that I can recall. We established a good rapport and got things done. I respected him as a valuable colleague and missed him when he left MUSC. I will always remember Dr. Askins fondly. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Askins was my favorite instructor during PA school... I learned more from him than could ever be printed in any medical textbook. I am truly saddened by his passing, but am so thankful that I had the privilege of knowing and learning from him. I would not be the PA that I am today if it weren't for Dr. Askins.

To the family, Dr. Askins was a wonderful doctor as I was one of his former patients in Marion. He is at peace now. He was a wonderful doctor and a very kind person. He will be missed.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the Askins Family:

I had the privilege of knowing Glen for one short year as he provided invaluable leadership to the PA program at the University of New England in Portland Maine. He touched each of us with us his wisdom and sense of humor, sharing stories capturing his remarkable experiences which often revealed important lessons on life. Glen was such a welcome, witty, and contributing member to the University! My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time, and hope that the memories and love that you hold comfort you now and in the days ahead. Karen Pardue (Portland, ME)

To the Askins Family.........my deepest condolences.  I did not know Mr. Askins; but I have the pleasure of working for his daughter Judy at WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia.  I can recall many Monday mornings when Judy would come into the office and we would ask each other how our weekends were and she would mention the wonderful visits with her parents. Judy was very proud of her dad. May God Bless Dr. D. G. Askins, Mrs. Askins and his family. (Michael Baum

Dear Jeanie and family:
Glen was one of the dearest friends I'll ever have. I was crushed when he left Marion, and I will always be sorry I didn't do more to keep our friendship as close as it had been. His keen intellect and his broad interest in so many facets of life made him more than a brilliant doctor. He had a zest and spirit for living and he was passionate about many things that have improved the lives of others. I will genuinely miss him, but I will always hold him in my memories as one of the best men I ever knew. I hope the quality of his life and service bring you comfort in this sad time. Glen's life was lived fully and richly.

Dear Jeanie and Family:

I only knew Glen for a short time while he was at the University of New England. I consider myself fortunate to have met and worked with him as a fellow program director. He was a great guy, and I appreciated his calm and insightful perspectives on the many things we discussed about our respective programs. I also enjoyed his sense of humor when we discussed such things as the difference between Maine shrimp and those you catch in SC.

My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Regards,

Mike Sheldon
