Clarence Robinson Obituary

Clarence Robinson CHARLESTON - The late Clarence Chester Robinson (aka Uncle Billy & Tut), was born in Charleston, SC, on April 13, 1911, a son of James C. Robinson and Martha Anderson Robinson. He was a graduate of Avery Normal Institute, Charleston, SC, and further his education at S.C. State College, Orangeburg, SC, and earned a BS Degree from Morris College, Sumter, SC. He did additional studies at New York University and University of PA. Mr. Robinson served over 30 years as an educator in many capacities that included math educator, guidance counselor, vice principal and principal, expanding his career in five states and ending his teaching profession in Charleston County Schools. He served four years in the armed services during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. Mr. Robinson was a member of Alpha Fraternity for many years. Mr. Robinson joined Old Bethel United Methodist Church at a young age and remained a faithful member until his death. When he retired he continued with his love of golf. He participated in golf tournaments in several states and won numerous certificates and trophies. At the age of 98 many golfers admired his continuos desire to play the game. He was a member of the Port City Club in Charleston. He was married to the late Elizabeth W. Robinson. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Eugene, Hilliard, Fletcher and St. Clair Robinson, two sisters, Herlene and Bernice Robinson. Surviving are his nieces, Yvonne Robinson Jones of Florence, SC, Doris Robinson Edwards of Jackson, Miss., nephews, Thomas (Mary Jo) Robinson, Wheaton, MD, Norman F. (Judy) Robinson, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, John Hilliard (Mary) Robinson, Sr., of Kingman, Arizona, grandnephew, Edmund Robinson, Charleston, SC, several grand and great-grandnieces and nephews. Memorial services for Mr. Robinson will be held Saturday, April 10, 2010, 3:00 p.m., at Old Bethel United Methodist Church, 222 Calhoun Street.
