Clarence Carter Obituary

Clarence Fletcher Carter III MT. PLEASANT - Clarence Fletcher Carter III, 87, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of the late Betty Rose Westbury Carter, entered into eternal rest Saturday, August 5, 2023. A visitation will be held Sunday, August 13, 2023, J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. His Celebration of Life will be held Monday, August 14, 2023, in St. Andrew's Historic Church, 440 Whilden St., Mt. Pleasant at 10:00 am. The family will receive friends at the church in Sam's Hall immediately following the service. Fletcher was born on January 15, 1936, in Charleston, South Carolina, the only son of the late Clarence Fletcher Carter, Jr. and the late Rosabell Agnes West Carter. He graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA, excelling in athletics, playing basketball, baseball, and football. Making the Washington, DC, all regional football team for two years, he had an undefeated football season and was named to the Episcopal Hall of Fame in athletics as a team captain in football then again with his football team for the undefeated season. Fletcher went on to play football at Clemson for one year, then met Bosie Westbury and transferred to the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. As a very involved member of the community, he served on the East Cooper School board, the Town of Mt. Pleasant Zoning Board of Adjustments, and the Anson Home board to name a few. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Cotillion, French Huguenot Society, Hibernian Society (Life Member), German Friendly (Life Member, Past President and standing Secretary for many years) and a past vestry member at St. Andrew's Church. You could often find Fletcher, playing golf with his Snee Farm group and any card game at the Mt. Pleasant Senior Center or Franke at Seaside. Fletcher joined the family business at Pinckney-Carter and remained there for over 60 years. His claim to fame was being the co-captain of the only undefeated football season in 1953 at Episcopal High School, then hitting a triple in baseball in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 outs to tie the game. The next batter got a hit, and he scored the winning run to beat Woodberry Forest. He was a family man and loved his sons, daughter-in-laws, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. And was especially proud that his three sons and three of his grandchildren followed his footprints at Pinckney-Carter. He is survived by his three sons, Clarence "Beau" Fletcher Carter IV (Catherine "Tina" Schweers Carter), James Dantzler Parler Carter (Elizabeth Marshall Carter) and William Cooper Carter (DeVeaux Quackenbush Carter); 8 grandchildren, Mary Catherine Carter Arthur (Rob), Elizabeth Carter Phillips (Ryne), Clarence Fletcher Carter V, Elizabeth Carter Harries (Ted), Marshall Caroline Carter, James Dantzler Parler Carter Jr, Anne Peyre DeVeaux Carter, and Rose Cooper Carter; and six great grandchildren, Thomas Martin Arthur, Henry William Arthur, Margaret Elizabeth Phillips, James Peterson Phillips, Carter Legare Phillips, and Thomas Augustus Harries. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Betty Rose "Bosie" Westbury Carter. Memorials can be made to the German Friendly Society Building Fund, 29 Chalmers St., Charleston SC 29401. Or, as a way of honoring the caring staff at Franke at Seaside, please consider donating in Fletcher's name to Lutheran Homes of South Carolina Foundation, 300 Ministry Drive www.lutheranhomesscfoundation.org. Fletcher and Bosie lit up any room, and brought smiles and laughter to everyone they encountered. Their love for each other and for their children was limitless. I remember them fondly from Christ Church. Prayers for all the family, Sandy Murphy
