Charles Muir Obituary

Charles Henry Muir II MT. PLEASANT - Charles Henry Muir II, 69, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Barbara D. Lucas, died Saturday, January 21, 2023. His Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2023, in St. Andrew's Church Mount Pleasant, 440 Whilden Street at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. Charlie was born August 29, 1953, in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, son of the late James Irvin Muir, Jr. and Lucile Grace Muir. He graduated from Porter Gaud School as a boarding student and went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina. Charlie owned Southern Nature Landscaping and Maintenance. When he entered the world, he was Charles Henry Muir II. When he left it, he was known by some as Hank and by others as Charlie, but he was known by everyone who ever crossed his path as beloved. Charlie's love of the earth began as a child working side-by-side with his mother in her garden. This same love led him to begin his career as a geologist, but it was only natural that he returned to the garden. Charlie loved his calling and managed some of Charleston's oldest and most beautiful landscapes. He was born to be Mother Nature's caretaker. Upon hearing the news of his death, one who knew his work remarked that she will never put her hands in the dirt again without thinking of Charlie. His philosophy on life was to treat people the way you want to be treated. "It's as simple as that," he said more times than we can count. It was not just a philosophy with Charlie, it was how he lived. You could see this in the love Charlie had for his family and friends, and humble to the end, he was overwhelmed and deeply touched by the outpouring of love when the seriousness of his illness became known. Charlie filled every hole he ever dug. With his death, we are left with a hole that we can fill only with our wonderful memories of him. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara; daughter, Grace Lucas Muir of Mt. Pleasant; his sister, Mikelle Carr of Freeport, ME; his brother, James Irvin Muir III (Ann) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; nieces: Kate M. Darby (Ed), Jean M. Wall (Bucky) and Alexa Lucas (Josh); nephews: William Earle Lucas Harton (Haley), Jason Kennedy (Susan), James I. Muir IV and Andrew C. Lucas (Joanna). Charlie is also survived by his brother-in-law, David Earle Lucas (Lisa); and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Memorials may be made in Charlie's name to the charity of one's choice. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. I am so very sorry to hear about Hank, as I called him many years ago.. Our parents, Jim & Lucille and Jim & Lee Morris were dear friends in Columbus. Hank and I were friends also in our high school years and early college. I enjoyed reading what he did in later life and happy he had a family. I am so sorry for your loss Cathy Morris Green

Charlie has been my customer for the last 20 years and it has always been a pleasure to talk awhile and find out what was going on in life and work. He was always kind, courteous, and always had a smile no matter how tired he may have been. I will miss him and am saddened to know he will be gone. I know he is up there somewhere making sure the lawn looks perfect! My deepest sympathy to his family.

Although I probably had not seen Charlie since Porter Gaud, he was always a good guy, a nice human being. I´m glad to hear he had family and friends in great numbers.

Dear Barbara,
I was very saddened to hear of Charlie. I had first seen his cheerful smile in the 1960's and that smile never went away over all these years, as each time I saw time, we chatted amicably and laughed. He had planted much of my yard several years ago, including a beautiful oak tree that I named Charlie, the sight of which, as was he, always a pleasant experience.

I am forever grateful for having known Charlie. He so generously shared his knowledge of all aspects of landscape and influenced my own work in the garden.
His love for the environment was contagious.
