Charles Jaques Obituary

Charles Jaques, Jr. CHARLETSON - Charles Aimar Jaques, Jr., 82, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Carole Lane Jaques, peacefully entered into eternal rest Thursday, March 21, 2024, after a seven year struggle with heart disease. His funeral service will be held 2 pm Friday, March 29, graveside, at Saint James Episcopal Church, 1872 Camp Rd. The family will receive visitors Thursday, 5-7 pm, at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. downtown chapel. Charles was born June 7, 1941, in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Charles Aimar Jaques, Sr. and Virginia Reeves Jaques. He attended Charleston High School, where he was a top athlete playing football, baseball, and basketball. He became widely known as the city's top basketball player, with the Post & Courier nicknaming him "Juggernaut Jaques." Charles then attended College of Charleston, where in addition to playing basketball and tennis, he met his future bride, Carole Lane. Following graduation with a degree in Economics and History, he began his career at SCE&G as an Electric Sales Representative, and through the years advanced to Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Customer Operations for the Southern Division. He was active in community affairs, serving as a board member of the Greater Charleston Homebuilders Association and James Island YMCA, where he coached boys' baseball for many years. He was President of the Porter-Gaud School Fathers Association and, along with Willard Hane, formed P-G's first boys' varsity basketball team. He was a member of the Charleston Trident Chamber of Commerce, Sertoma Club, and a Junior Achievement advisor. In his later years, Charles continued to support College of Charleston sports teams, and he was a devoted patron of the James Island Outreach and other community nonprofits. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including adult sports teams, hunting, skeet shooting, and reloading his own shotgun shells. Charles is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carole; daughter, Laura Jaques (Anoop Varghese) of Akron, OH; sister, Jeanne Amory of Newport News, VA; two grandchildren: Victoria Lane Beaudoin (Kenneth) and Charles A. Jaques IV; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Charles A. Jaques, III,; brother, John Henry Veronee; and sisters, Virginia Cadelle, Doris Solt, Helen Waltz, and Shirley Royster. Memorials may be made to James Island Outreach, 1860 Camp Rd., Charleston, SC 29412 or Pet Helpers, 1447 Folly Rd., Charleston, SC 29412. So very sorry. I've loved this family for half a century. Mr. Jaques was so very kind and smart - as reflected in his daughter. Of course his only mistake was for him to occasionally let me take his daughter to high school dances! ... I send love, hugs and the sweetest of memories.
