Charles Fowler Obituary
FOWLER, SR., Charles GASTONIA - Charlie Fowler, formerly of 111 Gamble Loop Road, Bessemer City, NC passed away February 22, 2006, at Courtland Terrace. He was born January 23, 1922 in Henderson County, NC to the late William Floyd Fowler and Dora Sawyer Fowler. Funeral: Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 25, FOUNDERS CHAPEL, MCLEAN FUNERAL HOME. Interment will be in Gaston Memorial Park with full military rites by the Last Man Club. Visitation one hour before service. Officiating clergy are Rev. Steven Blanton. Charlie was a veteran of World War II and a former POW, having participated in the invasion of Normandy. He was captured by the Germans after the invasion of Normandy and spent several months in a German POW camp. He was awarded numerous combat medals including the Combat Infantryman Badge, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze Service Stars, the American Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal, He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and WW II Last Man Club, He was employed in the textile machinery business throughout his life. He was a member and deacon of West Franklin Baptist Church. The family extends a special thank you to each staff member at Courtland Terrace who had a part in caring for Charlie. We know how much you loved Charlie and we are grateful that you were a part of his life. We also know that he loved you, may you find comfort in that knowledge. Survivors include son, Charles W. Fowler, Jr. and wife Kay of Summerville, SC; daughter, Traci Drucilla Fowler of Charleston, SC; Step-son, Doyt K. Hoffman, Jr. and wife Mary of Gastonia; sisters, Hazel Fowler of Asheville, NC; Betty Fowler of Robbinsville, NC; granddaughter Karen Benson of Charleston, SC; Step-granddaughter, Jennifer Hoffman of Gastonia; Great-grandchildren, Taylor, Riley, 'Sullivan, and Madison of Charleston, SC; brother-in-law, Tom Turner, Sr. of Gastonia; nieces and nephews. Preceded in death, in addition to parents; wives, Vera Turner Fowler and Reda N. Hoffman Fowler; brothers, Frank Fowler, and Oliver Fowler; sisters, Thelma F, Young, and Laura F. Emmett; half-sister, Pauline P. Lunsford; great grandson, Turner Benson; step-grandson Tyson "Ty" Hoffman. Memorials may be made to West Franklin Baptist Church, 450 S.
