Cecile Cothran Obituary

Cecile Langham Cothran Summerville - Cecile Langham Cothran, 76, of Summerville, South Carolina, wife of Samuel A. Cothran, Jr., entered into eternal rest Wednesday, August 11, 2021 after a brief battle with cancer. Her Graveside Service will be private. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Cecile was born January 4, 1945 in Mobile, Alabama, daughter of the late Cecil D. Langham and Virginia Nobles Langham. After her father returned from World War II, they resided in North Augusta, SC for many years and moved to Columbia, SC when she was still a child. She graduated from Columbia High School, where she was a cheerleader and president of the student body. She loved her high school days and spoke fondly of them often. She attended Furman University with a scholarship, and was later a graduate of Charleston Southern University. Cecile met her husband, Sam, while she was working in the art department at the Post & Courier and he in the advertising department in the late sixties. Cecile was an artist and owned an art gallery in downtown Charleston on North Atlantic Wharf for a number of years. She enjoyed entertaining friends in her gallery during the French Quarter Art Walks and was a member of local artist guilds. Her various volunteer, church, and civic involvements provided her with much fulfillment. A longtime member of the Flowertown Garden Club, she also served as State Publicity Chair for Garden Club of South Carolina and was the editor of the South Carolina Gardener. She was also a longtime member of the Summerville Cotillion. Cecile loved serving her community on the Board of Architectural Review for the Town of Summerville within the last decade. She had been a member of Summerville Presbyterian Church since approximately 1980, but returned to the denomination of her upbringing and also enjoyed membership at Summerville Baptist Church within the last few years. Cecile really enjoyed caring for the historic camellias in her yard and most of all, doing things with and for her family. Her strong Christian faith propelled her in life and had a tremendous impact on her family. Cecile leaves a wonderful legacy through that faith, her beautiful art, her willingness to serve, and her great capacity to love. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Samuel A. Cothran, Jr. of Summerville, SC; daughter, Perrin C. Conrad (Chip) of Summerville, SC and grandchild, Kristopher Samuel Conrad of Summerville, SC. She will be missed enormously by her family and friends. Memorials may be made to Summerville Presbyterian Church, 407 S Laurel St, Summerville, SC 29483 or Summerville Baptist Church, 417 Central Ave, Summerville, SC 29483. My Dear Perrin, I was very sad to see the news about your parents. While I never really knew your Dad, I remember fondly getting to know you when you and Tiffany made your debut together. It was also a delight to see you and your Mom at various functions for the cotillion. I am so happy that I could share that time with the two of you. I read in the paper how much your Dad loved sharing time with your son. JJ got that same experience with His Granddaddy Messervy.
If you need someone to talk to-please reach out to me.
Love to you and your Family- Linda Messervy

I am so sorry to hear about Cecile´s death. She was a dear cousin and was one of the sweetest people I have ever known. Though distance kept us from seeing each other often, the times we spent together were memorable. Sending my sympathies and prayers to all of the family. I am sure she is smiling down from heaven on everyone.

Cecile was a true Angel. She never met a stranger while at The Original Columbia High School and her bubbly personality made everyone who was around her laugh or smile. We and all of her former classmates were blessed to have known Cecile and will always love and remember her.

God bless Cecile and family. She attended CHS at the same time I did, and I´ll never forget her warmth and personality. She and I were elected in our senior year as "most popular" and I look at that photo in our annual with wonderful memories. RIP Cecile and I will always love you.
