Carolyn Yarbrough Obituary

Carolyn Yarbrough MT. PLEASANT - Carolyn S. Yarbrough, 85, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2023. Born on September 1, 1937 in Crewe, VA, she was a daughter of the late Emma Smith (Rorer) and Allan Hubbard Smith. Carolyn graduated from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond, where she met her future husband, Dabney Randolph Yarbrough III. She was happily married to Dabney until his death in 1997. She was a devoted mother to their three children, a wonderful grandmother, and had just experienced the joy of welcoming her first great-grandchild on June 9, 2023. She was a gifted gardener and flower arranger and loved sharing her gifts with others. She took immense pride and joy in her work with the Grace Church Cathedral Flower Guild. During her many years there she, along with others, helped establish the Fall Flower Festival, a major celebration featuring seminars by internationally known flower designers and public displays of the arrangements created during the workshops. She was very active in the Alhambra Garden Club and the Creekside Garden Club. She was also very proud of her work with the Mt. Pleasant Pride Committee, which was dedicated to finding opportunities for projects to keep the town of Mount Pleasant, beautiful, preserving its history and promoting civic pride. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Dabney R. Yarbrough, III, and their son, Dabney R. Yarbrough IV (Champ). Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Erroll Anne Hay Yarbrough Hodges and son-in- law, Thomas Tredway Hodges, her son, William Walker Yarbrough and daughter-in- law, Melissa Doscher Yarbrough, and her daughter- in-law, Kelley Parham Yarbrough, grandchildren Walker Tredway Hodges and his wife, Morgan Floyd Hodges, Thomas Heyward Hodges, Dabney Reynolds Yarbrough, Carolyn Anne Parham Yarbrough (Cappy), Dabney Lewis Yarbrough and great-grandson, Brooks Thomas Hodges. The family would like to extend thanks to all those who have helped us to care for our mother over the last few years, including Barron Care Management, Commonwise Home Care, Wellmore of Daniel Island, and Crescent Hospice. We are so thankful for Aquila Gaines, Katrina Sinclair, and Barbara Parks for their care over the years, and especially for the special and loving care provided by Barbara Parks to Mom and to our family during Mom's last days. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 22, 2023, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home located at 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mount Pleasant, SC. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 23, 2023, at Grace Church Cathedral located at 98 Wentworth St., Charleston, SC 29401. Immediately following the Funeral Service, a reception will be held in Hanahan Hall at Grace Church Cathedral for all family and friends. The burial will take place after the reception at the family plot in Magnolia Cemetery, located at 70 Cunnington Ave., Charleston, SC 29405.
