Carolyn Black Obituary

Carolyn Haigler Black Georgetown, SC - Carolyn Haigler Black, age 94, died Nov. 2, 2017, in Georgetown, SC. She was born July 4, 1923, in Alcolu, SC, daughter of the late Jess Summers Haigler, Sr. and Charlotte Roessler Haigler. She grew up in Charleston, SC where she attended St. Andrews Grammar School and graduated from Memminger High School. In 1944, she graduated from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Following that she attended Rice Business College because her father wanted her prepared for the business world. She became Secretary to the Vice President of Citizens and Southern National Bank in Charleston and later served as Secretary at Southern Kraft Division of International Paper Co. in Georgetown, SC. She met James Benjamin "Bud" Black, III just before he departed for the Southwest Pacific in 1944 during WWII. Following his return to the U.S., they were married on Sept. 7, 1946. In 1956, she began to fulfill her dream of being a school teacher. First she taught American and World History. In 1959, a position as a Spanish Teacher became available. She accepted that, but wanting more exposure to Spanish, attended Spanish Institutes during two summers at Appalachian State University, Boone, NC. The University presented her a Certificate of membership in the National Hispanic Society, Sigma Delta Pi. She taught Spanish in Georgetown High for ten years, a job that resulted in lifelong friendships. Following that she attended Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC for three summers and attained the degree of Master of Arts in Education with a major in Guidance and Counseling. She was a Guidance Counselor at Winyah High School and then became Guidance Director at Howard High. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional Society of Teachers. She was very active in the United Methodist Women serving in each location in which she lived: Texarkana, TX, Stamford, CT, and Georgetown, SC. At Duncan United Methodist Church in Georgetown, she served on the Evangelism Committee, Pastor Parish Relation Committee, Secretary of the Board of Trustees and was a member of the weekly Prayer Group. She was a member of the Loula Ford Circle and the Francis Asbury Class. She was a volunteer worker for both the Georgetown County Health Association and Georgetown Hospice for ten years. She was a member of the Arthur Manigault Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy and Winyah Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, James Benjamin "Bud" Black, III, of Georgetown; her brother, Jess Summers Haigler, Jr. and her daughter-in-law, Joni Wix Black Survivors include two sons, Bryan Anthony Black, and his son, Hunter Benjamin Black, of Columbia, SC, and son, Steven Douglas Black of Aiken SC (1st wife: Lynn Anderson Black of Augusta, GA) and their daughter, Allison Black Dotson (Joshua), of Gardendale. AL. The family will receive friends at Duncan United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 7th. Funeral Service will be at 2:00 in the sanctuary. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the care givers for their dedication to Carolyn: Willonda Alford, Dorothy Alston, Tawanna Brantley and Zaria Baker. Memorials may be sent to Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 Highmarket St., Georgetown, S. C. 29440-3527. Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral is in charge of the arrangements.
