Broadus Thompson, Jr. COLUMBIA, SC - The funeral service for Broadus Thompson, 79, will be held 11 o'clock, Saturday, February 23, 2013, in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 1100 Sumter Street, Columbia. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, after which the family will receive friends at the Palmetto Club, 1231 Sumter St. Mr. Thompson died Monday, February 18, 2013 in Mt. Pleasant where he maintained a second home since the early 1980's. Born on September 23, 1933 in Columbia, SC, he was a son of the late Broadus Thompson and Jane Guignard Thompson Curry. He was a graduate of Salisbury School in Connecticut and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Serving as President of Carolina Investment & Development Company, and in various capacities of numerous other business entities, Mr. Thompson was active in real estate development, property and asset management, as well as a variety of other investment ventures for over 50 years. Broadus had a strong appetite for adventure, he loved to travel, he kept a bag packed, and he was always ready to roll. He was an avid pilot and owned several personal aircraft over his lifetime. As a man who was continually in search of another project, he spent countless hours designing and building a personal motor yacht based on a commercial fishing trawler hull he christened the Navigator, which he lived aboard and captained on numerous voyages from Nova Scotia to the Caribbean. Broadus also was dedicated to the development of troubled and neglected youth, feeling strongly that everyone deserves an opportunity for betterment. He loved music and he loved to dance, but most of all he loved to laugh; always prepared to tell or listen to a good joke, or even a bad one. Mr. Thompson was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Forest Lake Club, the St. Andrew's Society of the City of Columbia, the Flamenco Dance Club, and the Rotary Club of Columbia where he was a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow and President's Club Donor to the Columbia Scholars Fund. Surviving are his wife, Mary Pringle Barone-Thompson of Mt. Pleasant; four sons, Harrison Reeves Thompson and his wife, April, and their children, Brian and Sarah of Mt. Pleasant, John Gabriel Guignard Thompson and his wife, Hope, and their son, John of Mt. Pleasant, Broadus Thompson, III of Lexington and his son, Andrew, of Mt. Pleasant, and Charles Claiborne Thompson and his wife, Krista Hampton, of Columbia. He also is survived by his brother, Alexander Guignard Thompson of Mt. Pleasant; and a niece, Alexa Thompson White and her husband, Miles, and their two children Reagan and Jake of Mt. Pleasant. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, LeDare Hurst Thompson Robinson.
