Bobbie Bryan Obituary

Bobbie Bryan JAMES ISLAND - Bobbie (Barrett) Bryan, 88, died Monday, May 8 from injuries sustained during a fall at her home. We remember and celebrate the remarkable life of Bobbie Bryan (7/25/1934-5/8/2023) who lived her life to the fullest and with verve, warmth, and keen intelligence. Bobbie married the love of her life, Howard "Bud" Bryan, raised foster and step-children, and traveled the world teaching. A veteran educator with unwavering dedication to children, she taught school on three continents, from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to Kobe, Japan, Washington, D.C., Cairo, Egypt, and the Republic of Singapore. In retirement, Bobbie spent many years enjoying the beauty of James Island and Folly Beach, and relishing the company of all the important people in her life. She lived and loved with tenacity and humor. We will miss you, Bobbie, and we will carry you with us. There will be Memorial held at DNR, outdoor classroom, June 3 at 3pm, 217 Fort Johnson Rd., Charleston, SC. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

Bobbie was a very special friend. She loved teaching her kids, reading on her porch, and we especially bonded because we love cats. We enjoyed being neighbors with Bud and Bobbie in Hallowing Point, VA where they were members of our River Rats boating group. We also enjoyed their time living in our current neighborhood in Santee, SC before they moved to Folly Beach. We will miss her and send our love to Bud.

I knew Bobbie through our monthly book club. She was down to earth, fun loving, and a great hostess. Bobbie was indeed a special person and her humor, kindness, and warmth will always be remembered.

I met Bobbie while were both teaching in Singapore in the 1990's. When she returned to the USA, I would always stop in and visit when I came to the USA on home leave. Our love of children brought me to Charleston for a month to stay with her and Bud while helping teach at the outreach program for Murray LaSaine students at her church. She had a way of instilling peace and joy to those around her. I always told her that she was the older sister that I never had. She and Bud were so much like family that I sold my home and moved to Charleston for seven years. Over the years in Singapore and Charleston we had many adventures. The best ones were the ones that when recalled them made us both laugh so hard we cried. I extend my love and sympathy to her family and friends. Her generous heart is missed by all who knew and loved her.

Bobbi was such a welcoming presence when we were new to the church. We enjoyed her bubbly personality and her love for Jesus. During the summer reading enrichment programs, her love for the children and her joy of teaching just overflowed. A life well spent!

I am saddened by the news of Bobbie's death. She was a volunteer at Murray LaSaine Elementary School on James Island for several years. We bonded immediately because of her passion for education and her love of children. The world was a better place because of Bobbie Bryan. Rest in peace, my friend!
