Barry Glass Obituary

Barry Glass Summerville - Barry A. Glass, of Summerville, passed away peacefully on August 21st following a short illness. Barry was the only child of William V. Glass and Lorraine McSherry Glass. Born August 17th, 1938 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Barry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1956 at the age of 18. He served with bravery, honor, and distinction in conflicts and at US bases throughout the world. He was wounded twice in battle and awarded Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals during two deployments in the Vietnam War. Most notably, he was awarded a Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism. He attended Wilmington College and married the love of his life, Shannon Barr Glass, of Wilmington, NC, in 1965. For the next 19 years they made Wilmington their home, where they raised three children while Barry worked as a supervisor at Ideal Cement Corporation, and where he loved to fish the waters of Wrightsville Beach whenever he could. In 1984, Barry was recruited by Giant Cement Corporation and the couple moved to Summerville, SC. He was a longtime member of the Elks Club #242 of Charleston, as well as, the Marine Corps fraternity Lowcountry Leathernecks. Barry leaves behind his devoted wife of 53 years, Shannon; his daughter Alison Garrett and her husband Steve of St. Augustine, FL; his daughter Rachel Phillips and her husband Tim of Savannah, GA; his son Peter Glass and his wife Kim of Mineral, VA; and two children from a previous marriage: Patrick Larson and wife Sarah of St. Cloud, MN; and Laura Fischer of Dallas, TX. A humble man who was a generous and loyal friend to so many, Barry's true legacy lies in the beautiful grandchildren he loved so much and was so proud of: Trey Mahoney, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; William Garrett of Raleigh, NC: Rhett Garrett of St. Augustine, FL; Nicholas Phillips of Savannah, GA, and Lauren Phillips of Savannah, GA; Ashley, Austin, and Alexandria Glass of Mineral, VA; and Amanda (Justin) Luepke, Erinn (James) Hoyt, Emily (James) VanderArk, and Ivory Larson of St. Cloud, MN. The family will receive visitors at 1:00 on Saturday, August 25th at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:00. My deepest sympathy to the family of a man I respected and admired. My favorite conversation with Barry was about the Marine Corp. Most specifically we talked about R Lee Ermey. Ermeys TV show, mail call, and opinions about politics. I laughed until my sides hurt, a lot of times, Heck, most of the time. Barry had a great sense of humor. Once we talked about Coffee, how good it can be.That was funny. I laugh thinking about it. I will miss him. He was a good man. God rest his soul.

Hello Shannon and children,
It's very sad to hear of Barry's passing. I know it is very hard to deal with the passing of a loved one. Mourn his passing but cherish the good memories. Like the passing of my precious 36 year old son, the passing of your husband and father is very hard to deal with. I hope I've written comforting words to you and not hurtful.
