Barbara Markham Obituary

Barbara Ann Markham MT. PLEASANT - Although Ann was born in a log cabin on a tobacco farm in N.C., she was larger than life. Her vivacious spirit could be seen not only in her smile but also in every party she planned and every outfit she wore from head to toe. She was a caregiver by nature and knew at a very young age that she wanted to be a nurse. She graduated from Martin Memorial Nursing in 1967 and continued her education through the years at The Citadel and The College of Charleston. She enjoyed many years working for various Hospice agencies and Assisted Living facilities. She adored her patients and spent countless hours with them and their families. Ann also loved to cook and was the successful owner of Ann's Sourdough Breads for over twenty years. She delighted in making flower arrangements for others and made everything beautiful with her special touch. Ann never met a stranger and was loved by all. No one had a bigger heart than Ann. Her greatest joys were her husband, her girls, her sweet grandbabies, and of course, her cats. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Tommie L. Markham; Two daughters, Alisha M. Ackerman, and Shannin Carr along with their spouses Marc Ackerman and Robert Carr; Three beloved grandchildren Hayden Ackerman, Hartleigh Ackerman, and Reznor Carr. She is preceded in death by her parents Stanley and Margaret Christian When she entered a room, it was never the same. She colored our world and every day was a party. Her greatest gift in life was taking something ordinary and making it extraordinary. Please join us in celebrating her life in true "Ann fashion"-bright colors, animal prints, big earrings, funky hats, or anything that says "Here I Am!" A celebration of Ann's life will be held at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home on Sunday December 30th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to "Share Our Suzy Lowcountry," an organization that assists breast cancer patients with whatever needs they might have. They helped Ann during her battle with breast cancer 2 1/2 years ago. Their address is P.O. Box 1778, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 Expressions of sympathy may be viewed or submitted online at www.mcalister-smith.com Arrangements have been entrusted to MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, MT. I am so sorry to hear of Ann's passing. I worked with Ann at Lutheran Hospice. I remember all her baked goods, hand-made decorations and colorful outfits. Her compassion for others went beyond words. She was such a special lady.

My dear friend Ann,
I will miss you so much. You have been such a joyful part of my life since I first met you. When I told you, you were like a sister to me and you said you felt the same, I felt overwhelmed that someone so awesome loved me back. Your loving kindness to all your patients was an inspiration for the rest of us to do a little better. Your sense of humor, well what can I say? I will never make cashew brittle without thinking of you. I know one thing for sure, heaven is a little more beautiful now that you are there. Rest in peace my dear, dear friend.
