Avie Rainwater Obituary

RAINWATER, JR., Avie FLORENCE - Avie James "Jimmy" Rainwater, Jr. died on January 31, 2009 at McLeod Hospice after suffering a cerebral aneurism. A Celebration of Life service will be held 4:00 PM Monday, February 2, 2009 at Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Mr. Rainwater was born July 12, 1929 in Florence to the late A.J. Rainwater, Sr. and Madge Timmons Rainwater. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Leila Drake Rainwater; two children, Christelle Rainwater Conner and Dr. Avie Rainwater, III, and their spouses Darrell L. Conner, Jr. and Karen Gadberry Rainwater; as well as six grandchildren, Dal Conner, Drake Conner, and Christopher Conner, and Dr. Chelsea Rainwater, Seth Rainwater, and Joshua Rainwater. He also leaves a sister, Everal Rainwater DeWitt and is predeceased by his brother, Robert R. Rainwater and brother-in-law, Sam DeWitt. Mr. Rainwater was a 1950 graduate of The Citadel and a member of the Summerall Guards. Subsequently, he served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force before returning to Florence to run the family business, Rainwater Gas and Oil Company. In the late 1950's he entered the mortgage and construction business. By the early, 1960's, Mr. Rainwater saw the social and economic conditions in the South were changing and he proceeded to develop the first mortgage financed subdivision in eastern South Carolina to be marketed to the black community, Spaulding Heights in Florence. After his Christian conversion in 1972, Mr. Rainwater was invited to serve on the Board of Directors of Logos International Publishing Company. In the following years he traveled widely in support of Christian missions throughout the world, including trips to Asia, Europe, Israel, and Latin America. During his life, Mr. Rainwater started and managed several businesses and maintained a lively interest in business, financial, and world affairs while being an avid reader as well. However, his most significant legacy is one of enthusiastic service to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As said in Romans 10:15, "How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace and bring glad tidings of good things." Mrs. Rainwater and family,
I was saddened to hear of this news.
I had returned from Bolivia for a short time and was looking forward to talking to Mr.Rainwater about the fun I had passing out salvation tracts, toys, and candy to the poor children there. I would call him every year excited about what the Lord was doing there in Bolivia. I will miss doing that however he already knows what I wanted to tell him since he is now home. It will seem long but will be soon that all of God's children in Christ will be together for eternity.
You and the family are in our prayers

Mrs. Rainwater and family,I had the priviledge to meet Mr. Rainwater when I rented my first house in the Florence area. He was such a dear and I remember after every conversation he would always leave you with "May God Bless You." He would encourage you always and I have never heard him say a negative thing about anyone....If he could help you he would. It has been a great pleasure to have known Mr. Rainwater and I hope that all who has come in contact with him will remember him by treating others kindly and extending a helping hand when needed. May God continue to Bless this Family and shower his Everlasting Love upon all of you..........

To the Rainwater family: My husband and I were deeply saddened when we saw Mr Rainwater had passed. Our first conversation with him about a home became a conversation about his conversion to Jesus Christ. He was a wonderful man to do business with and we could see Jesue in him. He was so kind and pleasant and good to us. I know he is missed terribly. But his testimony is still here to alot of people and many of us are better people in the Lord because Mr Rainwater during his lifetime shared the gospel to many, including us.What a testimony he had, Love to the family

Dear Avie, Chrissy, and Miss Leila,
Those of us who have been so lucky to have wonderful fathers and grandfathers are so blessed, but it doesn't replace the emptiness when they are gone. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Mr. Jimmy was definitely an important person to me many years ago. I so appreciated his wisdom and loving nature. I will always remember him in the Lazy Boy by the couch smiling. My love to all of you.

Leila and kids, I was so heartbroken when I heard that Jimmy was ill and it was so serious. When I heard that he had passed I felt a personal loss. As you know, we had some great times back in 1972 and afterwards when Jimmy became a Christian. Through all the difficulties of life it can truly be said that he never renounced, doubted, or questioned his relationship with Jesus. I can remember the times that he and I would visit friends of his in order to witness and pray for them. Part of me is sad because I felt that he still had more years of ministry to do and part of me is sad because he has made it to heaven before me. I know that there was some kind of celebration when he got there. The Grace of God will give you strength at this time and will sustain you just as the Grace of God brought him from his day of salvation to his day of Reward! I love you all, Wayne Miller, President of Cathedral Bible College, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Rainwater thru renting one of his properties. He would always minister to myself and my husband, I always told my husband that he was a special person because most people rent to you and they treat you as if you were just a tenant, but he would always speak and minister the gospel and I found that very comforting. When we would go to pay the rent his wife would invite us in and even offer us dinner, and that always made me feel like family, when we bought our first home and prepared to move out, he was happy for me more that I was for myself, to the Rainwater family you had a jewel that out shone any jewel there was, I know that you will let his memory live on in your hearts.

Leila, there is no way to adequately express what Jimmy's life--and yours--have meant to me. I am so thankful that God placed you both there. It grieves me that circumstances will prevent me from attending today's celebration, but I will come and visit as soon as I can. You and all the family are in our prayers. I love you.
