Anne Tigner Obituary

Anne Sligh Tigner CHARLESTON - Anne Sligh Tigner passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Charleston on January 12, 2017. Born Anne Butler Sligh on April 5, 1942, in Florence, SC, she was the daughter of Bernice Haselden Sligh and Hugh Lee Sligh. Anne lovingly remembered her early years in Florence, living in the seven-gabled house her parents built on Madison Avenue. She attended Mrs. McIntosh's Kindergarten and Royal School. While there, she received superior ratings in state piano competitions for three years before she was ten. After moving to Columbia in the sixth grade, she attended Hand Junior High and Dreher High School during the glorious fifties. Dances with unforgettable music, corsages delivered in the afternoon, no break cards with tassels, boys who were great dancers, and the bevy of "Grapevine Girls" formed life-long memories. Adding to this era was the 1959 red and white Ford Fairlane 500 flip-top convertible, a gift from Mother and Daddy on Christmas. After Columbia College and graduation from the University of South Carolina, Anne married Lee Tigner, moved to Charleston, taught school at First Baptist Church, and became an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She and Lee built a lovely home under two magnificent live oaks at 11 Ponce de Leon Avenue in Wespanee Plantation where Anne lived for 48 years. There she lovingly raised her two children, Caroline and Lee. Anne, along with her mother - whom everyone knew as "Nana" - and her sister, Lucille, built a beach house on Pawleys Island and named it "Pawleys Pull." Thirty-three summers were shared there with cousins Willis, Childs, and Brooks, as well as their beloved Nana, crabbing, shrimping, swimming, surfing, fishing, and cooking. In the 1990s, Anne started her own business, "Period Possessions", which imported majolica from Italy and sold it throughout the country. Along with her business partner and best friend, Herbert Erb, Anne enjoyed a successful business venture for over ten years. Her love of travel often took her to Europe; England, France, Greece, and Italy were here favorites. Her keen intellect, love of history, and wit enriched each excursion. She was a member of Mensa and the Charleston Library Society. Recent years had been a delight with the Charleston Horticultural Society. Her own garden flourished with hydrangeas, camellias, lilies, roses , and azaleas; and her magnificent oak in her backyard received the 2009 Outstanding Tree Award. Anne is survived by her daughter, Caroline T. Traugott of Charleston; son, Lee Tigner (Melissa) of Dawsonville, GA; sister, Lucille Cantey (Jim) of Columbia; grandchildren, Brooks Traugott, Lee Tigner III, Adelaide Tigner, and Brice Tigner; nephew, Willis Cantey (Susanne); and nieces, Childs C. Thrasher (Ryan), and Brooks C. Ferguson (Shaun). The family extends its appreciation and gratefulness to all those who have been so loving and supportive of Anne. Funeral services are being handled by Simplicity, 7475 Peppermill Parkway, N. Charleston, SC 29418. A memorial service celebrating Anne's life will be held on Monday, January 16, at 11:00 am at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, SC 29401. A gathering for family and friends will be held immediately after the service at Anne's home. Donations in Anne's memory may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, the Charleston Horticultural Society, or to a charity of one's choice. I knew Ann at USC. She was the prettiest girl I ever knew. I haven't seen her for years. It was always enough to know she was here and happy. I'm very sad thinking she's not here anymore. Charlie

I spent many a night at Anne's seven gabled home in Florence before she moved to Columbia. We both lived on Madison Avenue and spent a lot of fun times together. I was saddened when she moved but I know she made a lot of valuable friends in Columbia too. I will keep her family in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Mary Louise Collins Gay

I remember Anne from our high school days at Dreher. Her obituary expresses so elegantly the beautiful person I remember from so long ago and I am deeply saddened by her passing. Many memories remain of the adventures I had with her father and my Dreher buddies hunting on George Bellinger's land in the Congaree Swamp.

I am saddened to hear of Miss Anne's passing. I have sweet memories of growing up on Ponce De Leon Court with her as my neighbor, and the honor of having her as a family friend from there on out. She was always there with a smile and kind words in both good times and bad. Peace be with y'all during this time.

Dear Caroline

I am saddened to read of your Mom's passing. She was a true Southern lady in every way and I treasure my memories of her. We had such fun working together at the antique store all those years ago.

Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
