Alice Porth Obituary

PORTH, Alice A CENTURY OF LIVING On January 27, 2008, Alice Ruth Porth entered Eternal Glory at 4:10 am. Alice Ruth was born May 23, 1907 in Cross Keys, South Carolina. She was the youngest daughter of Wesley Dogan Hollis and Emily Kathryn Bomar. In 1930, she married Hermon Henry Porth of Lexington, SC. After moving to Chicago, Hollis Bomar Porth was born in 1934. Two years later, Donald Hermon Porth entered this world. Following WWII, she and Hermon bought a house on Sullivan's Island (where they lived and vacationed for the next 40 years). Throughout her life, Alice was an accomplished salesperson, coordinator, and musician. As a young woman, she sold precious jewelry and fine clothes. In the 60's and 70's, Alice served as Student Center Hostess and Resident Counselor for Columbia College. During this time, she also sang and played piano for Ridgecrest Baptist Church. Surviving are her son, Hollis Bomar Porth, I.; three grandchildren, Hollis Bomar Porth II, Tamara Ruth Henneman, Deirdre Alison Barley; and three great-grandchildren, Colton, Jasmine, and Skylar. A private memorial will be held by Alice Ruth's immediate family. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths

I will always remember Aunt Alice Ruth's stories and pictures at the Hollis reunion. My mother Emily Brownlee Boyd was Aunt Alice Ruth's neice.

We knew Mrs. Porth when she lived in Columbia and went to Ridgecrest Baptist Church. She was a good friend to all of our family - My grandparents (mr. and Mrs. Glaze) lived on Sullivans Island and the Porths were good friends. We were all saddened when Don passed away and then Mr. Porth.
She lived a long life - May she rest in peace.

My Mom, Florence Hollis Oliphant, was first cousin to Alice Ruth and they were close to the same age. My Mom was born in 1910 and died in 2003. They shared some happy times together when they were young. My sympathy to all the family. Hope I have some of Cousin Alice Ruth's genes!

I have fond memories of Aunt Alice Ruth at the Porth Reunions we have had for years. After eating and visiting, we'd often gather around the piano to sing. Try hard as I might, I could never outsing Aunt Alice Ruth. So sorry I was unable to contact her during the past several years. My sympathy to the family.

Aunt Alice Ruth was my grandmother's sister, and I always enjoyed seeing her at family reunions. I will remember her as a gracious and kind lady.

Mimi, as I knew her, was a kind and gentle person who surprised me one year with a cocunut cake for my birthday. She had a genuine concern for others that is mirrored by her family.
