Agnes Street Obituary

Agnes Louise Mengedoht Street Charleston - Agnes Louise Mengedoht Street, 88, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Timothy Simons Street died peacefully at home Tuesday, July 5, 2016. Her funeral service will be held Thursday, July 7, 2016 in The French Huguenot Church, 136 Church Street at 3:00 p.m. Interment, Churchyard. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Agnes was born August 13, 1927, in Greenville, South Carolina, daughter of the late Lanville Henry Mengedoht and Claudia Vincent Mengedoht, and raised on Montagu Street in Charleston where she attended Crafts School, Memminger High School and the College of Charleston. She worked briefly for Street Brothers Shipping Agency before marrying Timothy Street in 1947. Aggie was known for her beauty inside and out. She was kind, considerate, and soft spoken. Her health habits were ahead of their time. She swam daily in the summer and practiced yoga decades before yoga became mainstream. She was a lifelong walker, often opting to walk rather than drive. In the 1960's, she enjoyed modeling for a local women's boutique and was featured in Town and Country Magazine's iconic article, "City of Beauties." Aggie was a member of the Carolina Assembly, the Ivy Garden Club, the Carolina Art Association, Tri-Delta Sorority, the Junior League and was a faithful and active member of the French Huguenot Church. For many years, she served on the board of Association for the Blind, and was also a Brownie Troop Leader. A talented artist, she painted dozens of portraits, landscapes, streetscapes and scenes of historic Charleston. She was an accomplished bridge player and in spite of her gentle disposition, was a bit of a card shark at the bridge table. Aggie is survived by her husband of 68 years; two daughters: Barbara G.S. Hagerty (Richard) and Susan S. Gaillard (Foster); brother, Daniel E. Mengedoht (Marjorie); two sisters: Barbara M. Bell and Patricia M. Ball (Pre); seven grandchildren: Gervais Del Porto (Anthony), Curry Hagerty Uflacker (Andre), Richard Fleming Hagerty, Hart Huguet Hagerty, Mary Leize Simons Gaillard (Ben Buckley-Green), Susan Gaillard Hanzik (Mitchell), and William Foster Gaillard, Jr.; and one great-grandchild, Sofia Gervais Del Porto. She was predeceased by her parents and three siblings: Lanville H. Mengendoht, Jr., Claudia M. Cain and Ruth M. Long. The family wishes to thank Dr. Maru Cecil for her faithful, compassionate care during the past six months. Warm gratitude also goes to Marcia Dingle, Emma Southernland of Southernland Services, Rosetta El Shawafa and to the wonderful nurses and volunteers of Hospice, especially Sheri Harris, R.N. and Michele Wilson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the French Huguenot Church, 44 Queen Street, Charleston, SC 29401. They were the best of friends, and regular movie-buddies. I like to think that when Mom went to heaven, Aggie was standing right behind my father to welcome her. Charleston is not the same without this generation.

Dearest Tim, Barbara, Susan, and all the Family of Aggie,
Like everyone who knew her, I have such cherished pictures in my mind of all the moments we spent together throughout these many years-so many places and experiences.
The snapshots in my mind are such blessings to me and to my family. We were very fortunate to spend lovely time with Aggie and with all of you. What richness, color, beauty and elegance she added to our lives.
We will always remember her gracious kindness. She was well loved
and returned this love a thousand fold. We cry for you in the missing of her presence and laugh joyfully with you at the memories you hold in your minds and in your hearts.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

We were honored to meet Aggie at Mitchell and Susan's wedding. Mike was especially taken by her as he loved to dance as well, and they did - dance together. That is how we know her and think of her - a gracious, graceful lady dancing in life and after. Love and prayers to her and all who love her. Respectfully, Patty and Mike LaTouche

Mrs. Street was my idea of a Charlestn woman. She was alwqys gracious, without condensation, firm in the way things were done, but not judgemental or overtly critical. Her lithe appearance revealed an active woman ahead of her time. She was a pleasure to know and to have as a model.

I will always remember beautiful Aggie in her swim cap being the kindest host! Her lovely paintings in that sunny part of her house... such a gentle and gorgeous memory for me. My heart is broken for you all.

I can see your Mom walking down the street as I was walking my Black Lab. She was a joy and always lovely!

Charleston is a much lesser place without this kind soul who would help so many in a quiet way. She is the solid glue that held together her fine family and will be missed. God Bless the family and many friends during this time.

I am only one of many who dearly loved this beautiful lady, my mother's sister, my godmother. I will never forget her lovely spirit.
