1932 - 2026
William S. "Bill" Durant passed away on February 3, at the age of 93. Born September 5, 1932, in Mobile, Al to Dolive and Winnie Durant. Bill graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Chemical Engineering and served two years in the U.S. Army.
He later settled in North Augusta and spent 40 years at SRS, where he authored numerous safety publications and was honored with the Donald A. Orth Award. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beulah "Boots", in 1990.
After retiring to the Hendersonville area, Bill devoted himself to Interfaith Ministries and to Habitat for Humanity, helping build more than 200 homes and earning the organization's Lifetime Achievement Award at age 90. He also served his community as a coach, Scoutmaster, Lions Club officer, hospital auxiliary president, church elder, and generous blood donor.
Bill is survived by his wife of 33 years, Judith Nightingale; son Clark Durant; daughters Renee Ferguson and Amy Cassidy (Chris); four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; brother, Paul (Ruby) Durant; and nephews John and Hiram. He will be remembered for his story-telling, love of puzzles, and lifelong dedication to helping others.
A memorial service is planned for 11am on March 14 at St. Giles Chapel at Deerfield, Asheville, NC. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be directed to Habitat for Humanity.
