John Gilmore "Jack"
AIKEN - John Horace (Jack) Gilmore, age 90, passed away on September 10, 2024. Jack was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, on June 28, 1934, to Vivian and Lawrence Gilmore.
Jack earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He earned his MBA at East Carolina University.
Jack spent his career with Philips Petroleum and retired from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions in Aiken, SC.
Jack was an avid Track and Field athlete throughout his life. He was inducted into the Rensselaer Hall of Fame for Track and Field, setting school records for points in a season and in high jump. He was a USAAU age group champion in the Decathlon, Pentathlon and individual events. Upon retiring from competition in his 70's, he volunteered with track and field coaching at South Aiken High School.
Jack is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jackie Brantley Gilmore, his sons, daughter, their children and his twin sister, Ruth G. Mercer of Nebraska, his son, John H Gilmore, MD and wife Kelly of Chapel Hill, NC; his son William L. (Billy) and wife Terry of Charlotte, NC; his daughter Jennifer G. Thompson and husband Bryan, of Rocky Mount, NC, and Daughter in law, Angela F. Collins White (Bruce, Dec; David).
Jack's grandchildren are Tyler W. Collins (Jace), Ashley Poole (Brian), Matthew Gilmore (Emily), J. Garrett Gilmore (Sarah), Kaleigh Foster (Bob), Madeline Gilmore, Katherine Gilmore (Lewis), and David L. Gilmore.
Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence Gilmore, and stepsons, Samuel W. Collins and Bruce E Collins.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Golden Harvest Foodbank, 3310 Commerce Dr. Augusta, Ga., or the Salvation Army of Aiken, 3730 Richland Ave. W, Aiken, SC 29801.
