Edwin "Ed" Sampson, Jr.
AIKEN, SC - Mr. Edwin "Ed" Mosely Sampson, Jr., 95, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at his residence.
Ed was born February 3, 1922, in Columbus, Ohio, the oldest child of Edwin M. Sampson, Sr. and Isabell Floyd Sampson. After graduating from Upper Arlington High School, Ed attended Cornell University and was graduated with a Chemical Engineering degree. While attending Cornell, he was a cheerleader and played on the golf team.
Upon graduation, Mr. Sampson served in the Navy in the Pacific in the latter stages of World War II. On leave at a west coast port, he met Barbara Sipp, the love of his life, and they were married August 17, 1946, and remained so until Bobbie's death October 28, 2014 - 68 years later.
Ed was hired by DuPont, completed his military service, and returned to DuPont in Niagra Falls, New York, with his new wife, Bobbie. They then moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee on their way to Aiken in 1952, where he worked at the Savannah River Plant until his retirement in 1987.
Mr. Sampson spent a considerable amount of time serving on St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church's many committees. He helped run the St. Thaddeus Cemetery Fund for many years, served on the Vestry and was the Secretary of the Vestry. As a younger church member, he was the superintendent of the Sunday School at St. Thaddeus. In the early 1990s, Ed served as president for Aiken County Habitat for Humanity.
His favorite hobby was playing golf at his beloved Palmetto Golf Club which, as he used to say he was "allowed to join" in 1955. He loved sports of all kinds, and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan - even as the losses piled up in 2016! He loved coaching, not only little league baseball for years with Wes Hussey, but also spent hours coaching church league basketball. He also enjoyed playing bridge with friends and was thankful to his "bridge friends" who continued to include him in their group after Mrs. Sampson passed away. He spent weeks during his summer vacations driving (and tent-trailer camping) with Bobbie and his children across the country to visit our West Coast, Mid-West and Northeastern relatives. He was determined to expose his family to the beautiful scenery across our country, spend quality time with all of us, and expand our horizons.
Ed's legacy is one of independence, self-reliance, honesty, love of family and, always a firm handshake when he greeted anyone.
Survivors include daughters Kathy (Frank Wise), of Aiken, Mary (Doug Clementson) of Virginia, and son Pete Sampson (Lynn) of Aiken; brother-in-law Don Sipp (Mary Jo) of California, sister-in-law Barbara Sipp (Jim) of Ohio; grandchildren Betsy Dick, Laura Saunders, Scott Sampson, Alan Sampson, Josh Clementson, Rebekah Holt, Chris Clementson, Ruth Been, Daniel Clementson, Luke Clementson, Sarah Ferry and Anna Clarke; and great-grandchildren Micah, Nathan, Chloe, Jane, Ian Jude, Ashley, Emily, Satch, Caroline, Patrick, Maggie Rose and Miriam .
Mr. Sampson was preceded in death by his brother Jack Sampson.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church with Father Grant Wiseman officiating. Interment will be in the St. Thaddeus Cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends in the Stevenson-McClelland Building following the interment. The pallbearers will be grandsons Scott Sampson, Alan Sampson, Chris Clementson and Daniel Clementson, as well as grandsons-in-law Satch Saunders, Jeff Dick, Nate Clarke and Brian Holt. Also, the honorary pallbearers will be members of the Downtown Aiken Coffee Club, Tom Moore, Gail Marine, Mark Pitts and Bob Hanvey.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Permanent Cemetery Fund, St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, 125 Pendleton St. SW, Aiken, South Carolina 29801.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday evening at SHELLHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 924 HAYNE AVE., AIKEN, SC 29801.
