Betty Newville Obituary
PLACITAS, NM - Betty Lou Prior Newville passed away on August 24, 2016 after a difficult struggle against ALS, often known as Lou Gehrig's disease. She was born on April 30, 1962 in Augusta, Georgia and grew up in Aiken, South Carolina. She attended Aiken high school and graduated from Emory University in 1984. She moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1987 to finish medical school after meeting her future husband on a summer Grand Canyon river trip. They married shortly thereafter and made their home and raised their family in Placitas.
Dr. Newville practiced medicine in Albuquerque for over 25 years, both as a member of the faculty of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and in private practice. Most recently, she served as chief of the hospitalist division and vice-chief of staff at the Sandoval Regional Medical Center of the University of New Mexico.
Dr. Newville was dedicated to the practice of medicine and treasured her work seeing patients and working with other members of the greater Albuquerque medical community. She was much loved by her patients, their families and all who worked with her. She was diagnosed with ALS in 2014. At present there is no cure or real treatment for ALS. Her family asks that you support the needed research to find effective treatments and a cure for this devastating disease. Donations to support this research can be made to the national ALS Association. Dr. Newville is survived by her husband Ed Newville and their daughters Jessie and Christine.
A memorial gathering for her friends and family to celebrate her life will be announced at a later date.

I feel deep sorrow to learn that Betty passed away in 2016. Betty is someone I will never forget. She became a friend shortly after I moved to New Mexico, and she was delightful in every way. I used to love the stories about her grandfather and his many romantic adventures. She took responsibility for helping me establish a social life, and I'll always be grateful for her kindness. Betty and Ed were a wonderful influence on me many years ago. My best wishes go out to the family and Betty, who is still in my heart.

My name is Emily Penrod . I worked with Dr Newville at Kindred Hospital. I am retired since 2012. I was thinking about her today and decided to find out where she was working. I am so saddened by her passing. She was a great individual in so many ways and cared about her family so much. I know patients and co-workers miss her.

Dr. Newville took great care of my mom a few years ago while she was hospitalized. She was compassionate, kind, caring, and a great clinician. Her energy was so healing. I am so sad to hear of her passing. She was such a memorable doctor, and I as a family member and a healthcare professional, I appreciated the compassionate and great care she gave my mom and taking the time for such graceful communication with me through the experience. She was an unforgettable light in a dark place for us. Our prayers for her family, what a tragic loss to our community, but greater loss to them.

Betty Prior,
I knew you from 1st grade, 1969 at Mead Hall, until I left Aiken in '81. My memory of you was you were happy, kind, smart and generous at every step of the way. I knew you, and select others were destined for greatness. We both sought adventure in helping others on the opposite coast of Aiken, SC. You NM, Me, CA/OR. Your memory will be cherished in the hearts of many that lost touch with you, but the honor of having known your blessed nature will remain eternal. I pray Ed, Jessie, Christine and your family find's peace. You Were The Best of Them!

Dr. Newville was someone who made my 2 year tenure at Kindred Hospital so much betterror. She was cheerful smart and realistic. I had not heard that she had the diagnosis of ALS bot I am sure she met the challenges with the humor and competence that I saw all the time. She will be missed..a bright star is gone.
