Betty Coward Obituary
AIKEN - Mrs. Betty H. Coward, 82, widow of the late Hasseltine Chaffee "Bo" Coward, Jr. passed away Sunday, November 17, 2019.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 24 at the Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel on Hayne Ave. with the Rev. Dr. Fred W. Andrea III officiating. Interment will follow in Millbrook Baptist Church Cemetery.
Betty was born in North Augusta, SC to the late Pauline Purvis and Willard A. Howard. Betty has been part of the Aiken community for over 50 years and adored the town, her family and friends, and her church community. Betty taught first grade at Aiken Elementary School for decades and loved helping to shape young minds. She was a longtime member and former President of the Sunshine Garden Club, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and was an avid bridge player. Betty and her late husband were owners of Coward-Corley Seed Co for years and loved being a part of the small business community.
She is survived by her daughter, Julia Coward Hoffbauer and son-in-law Dale Hoffbauer, Tampa, FL and twin granddaughters, Rebecca Ann and Kyla Marie Hoffbauer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Aiken's First Baptist Church, 120 Chesterfield St. NE., Aiken, SC 29801 or the American Cancer Society, http://www.cancer.org/.
The family will receive friends Saturday, November 23 from 4:00-6:00 PM at SHELLHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 924 HAYNE AVE., AIKEN, SC.

Mrs. Betty's certainly missed already. I'm very grateful to her and her beautiful family for entrusting me to care for her. I'm very saddened to hear of her passing. But, she was prepared. She told me that she had lived an Awesome life, loved, and traveled the world. She had a contagious smile which always brightened my day. My prayers and deepest sympathy to you all. Much Love.

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Cowards passing. When I was about five years old Betty worked at the hospital with my mother Rosemary Napier. Betty was getting married to Bo and ask if I could be her flower girl. I still have the dress I wore. She was a lovely lady. I have been living in NYC but read the Aiken paper online most days and was saddened to read of her passing. My deepest sympathies to you and your family for your loss. My sincere sympathy goes out to the family. I will miss seeing Betty' smiling face which I saw many times at the bridge table. As a former bridge partner of Bo I have many fond memories of both of them
