Robert EGLAND Obituary

Chewelah - Lifelong Stevens County resident, Robert Merle Egland, 89, passed away July 11, 2024, at home in Chewelah, Washington, surrounded by his loving family. Born to Mel and Doris Egland in the Chewelah Hospital and raised on the family homestead west of Addy, Bob enjoyed a rich farm life with his parents and his siblings, Stanley, Lois, and Clifford. Bob attended grade school in Addy and completed his junior and senior high school education in Chewelah, graduating in 1953 as the first male Cheerleader in Jenkins High School history. While attending Washington State College, now Washington State University, Bob was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Korea. Shortly after discharge, he married Donna Motley. They built a home on the family homestead where they raised their three children, Terri, Ken, and Jan. Bob was involved in many community organizations and held leadership positions in several of them during his tenure. These organizations included 4-H, lifelong Grange members, Toastmasters, Kiwanis, VFW, Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion, as well as the Stump Ranchers. In 1989 Bob was awarded Honored Citizen of the Year in Chewelah for his many contributions to the community, he shared this award with fellow citizen Rob Chalmers. He loved the outdoors, particularly huckleberry picking, golf, horseback riding, and hunting, happily sharing his love of these activities with family and friends. Bob was appointed the position of Postmaster in Addy in 1965 until his transfer to Chewelah, as the Postmaster, in 1975 where he served his community until his retirement in 1990. He filled in, briefly, during that tenure, as the Postmaster in Couer D'Alene. In 1981, he also served as the United States Postmaster as one of the four Postmaster Trainers in the Spokane Region (which includes parts of Idaho). During that time he trained over 30 Postmasters to serve surrounding communities. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Mel and Doris Egland; and his siblings, Stanley and Lois. His brother, Cliff, passed away also, on July 11, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Donna; and their children, Terri of Chewelah, Ken of Addy, and Jan of Marana, AZ. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Tanya Bell, Kyle Egland, and Heather Egland. His great-grandchildren include Madison, Kaspia, Brantley, and Kinsley. A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at the American Legion Post 54 in Chewelah.
