CAMDEN — Gene A Black, 81, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on July 10, 2023.
Born Feb. 20, 1942 in College Corner, he was the son of the late William E. Black and Emily Francis (Allen) Black. On June 11, 1977, he married Sandra K. (Estes) Caldwell at Hueston Woods Lodge, College Corner, and they shared 46 years of marriage together with a blended family of five children.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Sandy) Black, his children, Debra (Ron) Carver, Larry Black, Penney (Dave) Losey, seven grandchildren and two great- grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by son William J. Black, daughter, Linda C. (Black) Hicks, stepson James Lee Caldwell, grandson Steven Carver, brother Joneile (Joe) Black, son-in-law Doug Rhodus, brothers-in-law Junior Stines and Arvol Tracy Estes, and sisters-in-law Darlene Black and Frances Dean (Estes) Bowman.
Gene was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed fishing, especially in Canada, and mushroom hunting in springtime. He always raised a huge vegetable garden and his favorite pastime was running. He started running in 1984 and never missed a step. He ran hundreds of races through the years, everything from a 25-yard dash to a 50-mile run. He set a goal of doing 100 races in a year, which he completed successfully multiple times, and included more than 100 races.
Gene was a kind and giving person. He never knew the meaning of "no," and was always willing to help anyone; whether it be family, friend, neighbor or stranger he was always ready to help.
There will be a Celebration of Life gathering Friday, July 12, 5-8 p.m., at 7208 Eaton Oxford Rd, Camden.
