Dr. Michael George Schumacher, 80, entered into eternal rest December 6, 2025, at home with his family. Funeral Services will be conducted Monday morning, December 15th, at 11 o'clock in Fort Jackson National Cemetery with Veteran Honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday afternoon, December 14th, from 3 until 5 o'clock.
Michael's remarkable journey touched the lives of all who knew him. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 29, 1945, Michael was the fifth of six children to William Reeda Schumacher, Sr. and Genevieve Schneider Schumacher. From an early age, he demonstrated a spirit of curiosity and service that would define his life.
After attending the University of Albuquerque, Michael answered the call to serve his country, spending 2.5 years in the Army. It was during his time stationed in South Korea that he connected with his future wife, Marie Diane Clark, through a heartfelt letter. Their love blossomed across continents, culminating in their marriage in Albuquerque, NM, in 1971. Michael continued his pursuit of knowledge, earning an MBA from UCLA and a Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss).
Throughout his diverse career, Michael made a lasting impact in fields ranging from federal government service to public and managerial accounting, and, most notably, teaching. A true educator at heart, he inspired students at both the university and primary school levels, sharing his passion for accounting and learning with many.
Together with Marie and their children, Michael embraced life's joys and challenges, living from coast to coast and spending cherished years in the CSRA and Shelby, NC. His legacy is one of kindness, love, faith, and unwavering dedication to family. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother; a lifelong sports fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Ole Miss Rebels; an enthusiast of classical music, literature, puzzles, and politics; and a proud Army veteran.
As we honor Michael's memory, we celebrate a life well-lived-a life marked by compassion, wisdom, and the joy of connecting with others. His spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by two brothers, William Schumacher, Jr and Richard Schumacher. Surviving family left to cherish his memory include his wife of 54 years Marie Schumacher of
North Augusta, SC; his children, David Schumacher (Celeatha) of Martinez, GA and Laura Schumacher of Charlotte, NC; brothers Jerry Schumacher (Mary) of Chicago, IL and Frank (Judy) Schumacher of DePere, WI; a sister Frances Lipton of Gardnerville, NV; grandchildren, Brittany Sills (Daniel), Lexi Schumacher, and Amaryllis Wynne; and his beloved dog Hank.
