GILBERT, SC - Anne P. Snelgrove, age 91, wife of the late VonLeigh Omar "Dick" Snelgrove and daughter of the late Tom Pope and Odessa Lentz Pope, departed this life and went to be with her Lord and Savior March 1, 2017. She is survived by her devoted sons, Von (Vicki) Snelgrove of Aiken, SC and Keith (Risse) Snelgrove, of Houston, Texas; grandchildren Cherie (Brent) Schooley, Beverly Snelgrove, Kristin Snelgrove, Leigh Snelgrove, Jana Snelgrove and her furry companion, Brandy.
She was born March 30, 1925 in North Carolina and grew up in Fairfield County, SC. She graduated from Monticello High School and went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina with a BS in Business English (commerce, shorthand, typing). While teaching she furthered her education by earning a Master's Degree in Education while being a devoted wife and helping raise two sons.
She enjoyed a long and legendary career as a teacher, having taught school for 33 years (25 years at Pelion High School; 5 years at Chapin High School and 3 years at Landrum). She taught thousands of students and was well-loved and respected by her students and peers, many of whom sought her advice after her retirement. She was the sponsor of the Pelion High School newspaper and Faculty Advisor of the Future Business Leaders of America. She has been nominated to be a member of the Pelion High School Hall of Fame. She was inducted as a Life Member into the Women's League of Newberry College, having been nominated and supported by the Cedar Grove Lutheran Church and WELCA.
She married Dick Snelgrove on August 7, 1949 and had been married 58 years at the time of his death. She was a member of Cedar Grove Lutheran Church. Anne was a loving and generous mother and caretaker. Her greatest joys were her husband, sons, their wives and grandchildren. She had a quick wit, desire to help, and a unique way of imparting life lessons to those around her. She will be dearly missed by loved ones and extended family. She made a difference in the lives of those she touched during her life's journey. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Vann and Sarah.
A service, paying tribute to her life and celebrating her homegoing, will be held at Cedar Grove Lutheran Church in Gilbert, SC on Sunday March 5, 2017 at 3:00 pm with Pastor Alvin Shrum of Cedar Grove Lutheran Church officiating. The interment will follow at Cedar Grove Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren- Beverly Snelgrove, Kristin Snelgrove, Leigh Snelgrove, Jana Snelgrove, Brent Schooley and Cherie Schooley. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clemson University Foundation, for the VonLeigh O. and Anne P. Snelgrove Endowment, P. O. Of 1889 Clemson, SC 29633 or a charity of one's choice. The family thanks Ruby Jones for her loving care of their mother for the last several years.
