William Burton Obituary

William Robert Burton, beloved son, husband, father and grandfather passed away on January 12, 2026. He was born in Montgomery County, VA on July 10, 1932 to a large family. He served in the United States Army, and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. Later he worked at General Electric in Salem, and was a contractor for decades with his brother Charley, as Burton Contractors, Inc.
He is preceded in death by his parents; John and Ruby Burton, eight siblings (Bea, Claude, Helen, Geraldine, Betty, Lois, John and Charles Roy) and his son Michael Burton. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Ruth (Bowman) Burton; son, Robert Burton; daughter-in-law, Jane Burton; son, Doug (Tina) Burton; son, Derek (Lori) Burton; and sister-in-law, Sandra Burton. Also survived by 8 grandchildren; Paige (Michael) Russell, Chelsea Burton, Ally (Chris) Herman, Kristen (Bryan) Burton-Gibson, Brian (Jessica) Burton, Courtney (Tyler) Barr, Ian (Grace) Burton and Mallory (Andrew) Barr. He is also blessed with twelve great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by those who love him.
Memorial services will be held Friday, January 16, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Dublin Baptist Church, with Burl Bowman officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
