Thomas Goetz of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, passed away peacefully with his loving family and friends by his side on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at his home in The Lakes at Litchfield. He was born January 14, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Ray and Mae Goetz. Along with his parents and his brother Gregory, he was preceded in death by his wife Maryanne and his daughter Anne Welsh.
From a young age, Tom had a love for cars and the joy of being around people. As a teenager, he could be found working on and racing his 1934 Ford, often with a big smile and a laugh that carried. That joy for life only grew when he met his wife Maryanne on a blind date. They were married for 58 years, sharing a deep love for dancing, raising four children, and creating countless memories together. Family vacations camping across the United States were filled with laughter, adventure, and togetherness.
Tom attended the University of Detroit, where he studied engineering before beginning a lifelong career at Ford Motor Company. He started as an engine designer and professional driver, building and tuning elite engines that went on to win numerous professional races. He later became a lead engineer and ultimately served in engine plant leadership. His proudest professional accomplishment came with the development of cost-effective diagnostics for engine production using noise and vibration analysis-an innovation that left a lasting mark on the industry and reflected his gift for practical problem-solving.
Tom also loved sharing his enthusiasm for cars with others. Along the Grand Strand, he could often be found at local car shows, swapping stories and showing off one of his many classics. Beyond cars, he lived his Catholic faith actively and consistently, serving in every parish he belonged to. Most recently, he was an active parishioner at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church in Pawleys Island, where he and Maryanne moved in 2002.
Tom is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild: Michael and Mary, with grandsons Joe, Leo, and Jack; Son-in-law Scott and grandsons Bill (Trish), Ian, and Scotty Welsh, and granddaughter Marie Welsh; son James and Alicia, with granddaughters Melanie, Samantha, and Ashley; son Tom and Amy, with grandson Gavin and granddaughter Jillian; great-granddaughter Gemma Welsh; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved him dearly. Including his care givers and friends who loved him and who he loved and made laugh.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church, 1633 Waverly Rd, Pawleys Island, SC 29585, on a date to be determined. His interment will follow in the church columbarium.
