Norma Jean Hartman Rutherford December 17, 1930 - September 28, 2025 Jean "Granny", age 94 of Surfside Beach passed away peacefully on Sunday morning September 28, 2025 at her home surrounded by family. She was the daughter of the late Allen and Dorothy Hartman, born on December 17, 1930 in Washington, D.C., she was a 1948 graduate of Maryland Park High School. At the age of 17 she opened Jean Hartman Studio of Dance in District Heights, MD where she was a dance teacher. She was married on May 2, 1954 to the late William H. Rutherford in Forestville, MD. During their marriage they were stationed with the United States Air Force in Georgia, Texas, Alaska, South Carolina, Washington D.C, South Carolina, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and finally settled in Surfside Beach, South Carolina in 1976. She had a vibrant career in real estate with many accomplishments to include Broker in Charge in 1984. She held positions as State Director, and Second Vice President with Greater Horry County Board of Realtors, INC. from 1985-1987. She enjoyed other opportunities throughout her career with Century 21, Ardis Realty, Garden City Realty, Legends, and Heritage Plantation. Jean was an active member and faithful servant of The Well by the Sea, serving in many capacities. She enjoyed arranging the altar flowers in which she took much pride, playing bridge with friends, and caring for her friends and family. She was an extraordinary woman with so much love to give and loved by all. She is predeceased by her husband William H. Rutherford and daughter Cynthia Ann Lambe. She is survived by her son Allen C. Rutherford; granddaughter Ashley Growden and husband Eric; great grandchildren Bradley and Jackson Growden; sister in law Rosanne Schoen and husband Henry; niece Laura Eser and husband Chuck; extended family, and many many friends. The memorial service will be held on Wednesday October 29, 2025, 11 AM, at The Well by the Sea, 211 Forestbrook Rd, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579. Presiding over the services will be Father Tom Woodle. Reception to immediately follow from 12 pm - 2 pm Inurnment will take place at 3 PM at The Church of the Resurrection, 8901 US Highway 17 Bypass South, Surfside Beach, SC 29575. In lieu of flowers, donations in loving memory of Jean can be made to The Well by the Sea.
