Mary Tall Obituary

It is with deep love and affection that we announce the passing of Mary Frances Tall, age 86, who went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 19, 2025. Mary was born and raised in Conway, South Carolina, the beloved daughter of Allard and Esther King. One of 14 siblings, she was born on May 2, 1939, into a large and loving family. In 1969, she moved to Myrtle Beach, where her love for the hospitality industry flourished. Just two years later, in 1971, Mary purchased the Sea Dip Motel on the oceanfront-a business she proudly owned and operated until 2025. As one of the early female pioneers in Myrtle Beach's hospitality industry, Mary broke barriers and set standards. Her leadership extended beyond business; she was a dedicated civic contributor and community leader. Mary became an active member of the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce in 1975, and in 1993, she was honored as "Volunteer of the Year" for her exceptional service and commitment. She also served for 15 years on the City's Accommodation Tax Committee and was a proud member of the Myrtle Beach Women's Club and Hospitality Association. While Mary's professional accomplishments were many, her heart was always with her family. She was, first and foremost, a devoted mother and grandmother. Her greatest joy came from her daughter, Jackie Hatley, and her granddaughter, Athena Vereen, whom she loved unconditionally. Survivors include her son-in-law, Chad Hatley who she also loved and respected. Mary was the proud matriarch of her family, a strong, guiding presence who will forever be cherished and missed. Mary was preceded in death by her siblings: Thurman King, Estelle King, Mazie King Brown, Allard King Jr., Harmon King, Sam King, Dorothy King Anderson, Howard King, Mildred King, Billy Joe King, Jack King, Donald King and Johnny Collins King. She also loved deeply numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends, all of whom she held close to her heart. A visitation will be held at McMillan-Small Funeral Home on Saturday, May 24 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel. Entombment will follow at Hillcrest Mausoleum. Mary Frances Tall's legacy of love, leadership, and unwavering dedication to her family and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to, McLeod Health Foundation, 300 South Dargan St., Florence, SC 29502. My relationship to Mary was as a guest at the Sea Dip. Twenty years ago I found this beautiful lady along with her daughter and niece managing the oceanfront Sea Dip...my home away from home...my sanctuary of peace. I looked forward to seeing Mary each visit. She always had a beautiful smile and offered welcoming words and sage advice throughout our 20 year relationship. I love her and miss her dearly. God bless Mary. Prepare my room for me I hope to see you again.
