Joseph Decker Obituary
It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Joseph A. Decker, beloved son, brother, father, uncle, devoted friend, and respected horseman and dog breeder, who went home to the Lord on August 9, 2025, at the age of 86.
Born on March 27, 1939, in Arcade, New York, Joseph grew up with a deep respect for nature and a remarkable gift for working with animals. His passion for horses led him to a lifetime of training, caring for, and understanding these magnificent creatures. Whether in the show ring, on the trail, or simply in the quiet of the barn, Joseph found peace and purpose in their company. His skill and patience made him a sought-after horse trainer whose influence will live on in every rider and animal he touched.
Equally devoted to his canine companions, Joseph spent decades training and breeding dogs with the same care and dedication he gave to his horses. Known for producing dogs with exceptional temperament and skill, he helped countless families and working partners find the perfect match. His kennels were filled not just with animals, but with love, loyalty, and respect.
Joseph was a faithful Episcopalian who loved Jesus deeply. His life was a testament to his faith, and his kindness, humility, and generosity reflected the values he held dear. He believed in living with purpose, serving others, and giving thanks for every blessing.
Throughout his life, Joseph achieved many accomplishments and marketing endeavors -too many to list fully-but each was grounded in his unwavering integrity, work ethic, and compassion. He inspired others not just with his knowledge, but with his humor, wisdom, and ability to see the best in everyone.
Joseph was predeceased by his father, Joseph A. Decker, Sr., his mother, Mildred Pauline Cooper, his sister, Jane Crump, his brother, Gail Gordon Lux, Sr., his son, Joseph Decker and nephews Jonathan L. Miess and Matthew T. Lux.
He is survived by his long time partner and friend Nancy VanBuskirk, grandchildren Jeremy and Chaz Decker, his sister Ruth M. Lux, and brothers Herbert Warren Lux, Jr. and Michael Lux; nieces Penny, Tracy, Toni, Angela, Kelly, Katie, Kenzie, and Kimberly; nephews Herbert, Gail Jr., Daniel, Benjamin, Geoff, Philip, Marc, and Jason; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews, countless friends, students, and fellow animal lovers who will carry forward his lessons and his love for life.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date along with being laid to rest at Maplewood Cemetery in Springville, NY. In honor of his memory, the family asks that donations be made to American Quarter Horse Association, equestrian organization, or service dog training group a tribute to his lifelong dedication to the animals who brought him so much joy.
Joseph A. Decker lived a life rich with purpose, compassion, and faith. While his passing leaves an emptiness that cannot be filled, his legacy-etched in the hoofbeats of horses, the wagging tails of dogs, and the hearts of all who knew him-will endure for generations.
