John Vereen Obituary

John David Vereen, 83 of Murrells Inlet passed peacefully surrounded by his family in his home August 13, 2025, the same piece of property that he was honored to call home the majority of his life and his favorite piece of the world. David was the devoted husband to Patricia McCormick Vereen for over 63 years. He is predeceased by his parents Samuel Gordon Vereen and Lula Fulton Vereen and a brother Samual Gordon Vereen Jr. His legacy will live on in the hearts and smiles of his family Gwendolyn Vereen Purtill (Patrick) of Annandale Virginia and Julie Vereen Hammel (David) of Murrells Inlet and his grandchildren Bridget Purtill, Samantha Lanford (Patrick), Katie Purtill, John Purtill, Benjamin Hammel, Jessica Hammel, and his nieces and nephews. David is a retired building contractor whose most honorable role was his selfless dedication to his family and friends. He was known for his kindness and generosity to all who knew him and endless capacity to be of loving service to those around him. He was a member of Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church where he served many faithful years on the session and as an elder of the church. He loved the outdoors, boating, hunting, fishing, building and creating. There will be a visitation at The Little Chapel located at the Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church, 4499 US Highway 17 Bypass South, Murrells Inlet, SC from 5-7pm on Friday August 15, 2025. A memorial service will be held at the Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church at 10 am on Saturday August 16, 2025.
