James Robinson Obituary
Dr. James Waymond Robinson was born on November 6, 1925, in Wilmington, North Carolina, the second-to-last child of Samuel and Addie Robinson.
After graduating from high school, he enrolled at North Carolina College in Durham. Following his first year of study, he was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army, where he served honorably for 18 months. Upon returning home, he resumed his studies at North Carolina College, earning a B.S. in Biology. He went on to teach for one year each at Spelman College (high school) and Alabama State University before pursuing further education.
Waymond later attended New York University as a special student, completing three years of general and organic chemistry. In 1956, he was accepted to Meharry Medical College, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1960. He completed his residency at Knickerbocker Hospital in New York City in 1965, after which he entered private practice.
For the next 26 years, Dr. Robinson dedicated himself to caring for his patients while also managing eight methadone clinics in Harlem. His leadership and compassion in this work offered hope and healing to countless individuals struggling with substance abuse and addiction. He also maintained admitting privileges at three area hospitals, extending his reach within the medical community.
During his years in New York, Waymond met his beloved wife, the late Carol A. Blackmar, at Harlem Hospital. The two married in 1978 and shared a loving partnership filled with laughter, hospitality, and devotion. After retiring in 1991, they settled in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to be closer to family. Together, they embraced the slower pace of life, welcomed new friendships, and opened their home for holiday gatherings and visits from loved ones.
Dr. Robinson was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Carol, and by all of his siblings. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who will remember him for his dedication, humor, and enduring love.
