James Berry Obituary

James "Chip" Berry, III, age 68, of Kure Beach, North Carolina, passed away on September 20, 2025, surrounded by his family and friends. Born on March 29, 1957, in Marion, South Carolina, Chip was the son of Dr. James B. Berry, Jr. and Stella Anne Willis Berry. He devoted his life to his wife, children, and friends, but his greatest joy was always his relationship with God. Chip will be remembered for his warm smile, adventurous spirit, and love of offshore fishing. He lived life with generosity, humor, and a heart big enough to welcome everyone he met. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Wanda Quarles Berry; his children, James "Jay" B. Berry, IV, and AnnaLee Berry Johnston (Eric Johnston); and his brother, Allen "Hal" Berry. He also leaves behind a large extended family and countless friends who will forever cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. James B. Berry, Jr.; his mother, Anne Willis Berry; and his brother, Thomas "Tommy" L. Berry, II. Faith and family were the foundation of Chip's life. He was an avid sportsman and dedicated conservationist, serving on numerous boards across the Carolinas. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, he began his career with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, where his love of conservation and the outdoors truly flourished. In 1988, Chip combined his passion for the ocean with his entrepreneurial spirit to create Maps Unique, an offshore mapping company that reflected both his deep knowledge of the sea and his natural ability to connect with people. Beyond the water, Chip also found great fulfillment in real estate, helping countless buyers and sellers achieve their dreams in the Wilmington, NC area. A service celebrating Chip's life will be held on Monday, September 29, 2025, at Belin United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family are warmly invited to attend and share their memories.
