Harry Hasudungan Napitupulu, 79, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026. He was born on June 26, 1946, in Siborongborong, Indonesia, and spent his childhood growing up in Pematang Siantar, where the foundations of his character, faith, and love for family were formed. He was the son of the late Lucius Sutan Maruli Tua Napitupulu and Hilderia br. Lumbantobing, and the third youngest of ten children. Harry is survived by his older brother Togar P. Napitupulu.
Harry continued his education in Bandung, where he attended high school, and later pursued higher education in Japan. From an early age, he was known for his discipline, intelligence, and competitive spirit. He was highly active in many areas of life. He was an avid runner. He won numerous golf, tennis, and bowling tournaments. He even earned recognition as a chess champion-reflecting both his strategic mind and his passion for excellence.
He went on to serve with distinction for over 23 years at the Indonesian Embassy –
Washington, DC, where he carried himself with professionalism, humility, and deep pride in representing his country. His work reflected not only his dedication but also his lifelong commitment to serving others.
At the center of Harry's life was his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. A lifelong believer, he lived out his faith with quiet strength and steadfast devotion. He was a long-time member of the Church of the Atonement and helped support the formation of the Batak Christian Protestant Church (Huria Kristen Batak Protestan – HKBP Church) in New York City. He also served faithfully as an elder in both the Indonesian Christian Fellowship Church and Gereja Kasih Anugerah Church, dedicating a combined 20 years to ministry, leadership, and guiding others in their spiritual walk.
After living more than 50 years in the Washington metropolitan area, primarily in Montgomery County, MD, Harry and his beloved wife, Remelia Napitupulu, relocated to
Conway, South Carolina on June 2024. There, they became active members of Langston Baptist Church, continuing their commitment to fellowship, worship, and service in their new community.
Harry was a devoted husband to Remelia T. Napitupulu, with whom he shared 50 years of loving marriage. Together, they built a life centered on faith, resilience, and deep devotion to one another.
He was a proud and loving father to Maria Napitupulu (Spencer Lefevre), Anggiat Napitupulu (Christa Bopst), and Toman Napitupulu (Kennita Rollins), and a cherished grandfather to Summer Hope Napitupulu. His family was his greatest joy, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and guidance that will live on through them.
Harry had a gift for bringing people together. He loved to cook and entertain, creating moments of joy and connection for family and friends. He was known for offering encouragement and comfort to those around him, especially during times of need. He lived with an "open door" spirit-always welcoming others into his home and his life with warmth, generosity, and a servant's heart.
Harry was deeply proud of his Indonesian and Batak heritage and remained closely connected to his roots, maintaining strong relationships with friends and family in Indonesia throughout his life. He made it a priority to return every few years. His cultural pride, combined with his faith, shaped a life rich in tradition, community, and purpose.
Harry will be remembered for his gentle spirit, wisdom, unwavering faith, and the love he shared so freely. Though he is no longer with us, we take comfort in knowing he is now at peace in the presence of the Lord.
