Betty Calhoun Obituary

Betty Sellers Calhoun, age 82, formerly of Surfside Beach, SC, passed away October 13, 2025 at Novant Regional Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia, NC. She was born February 5, 1943 in South Port, NC the first child of the late Levy Wendell Sellers & Minnie Reynolds Sellers. A graduate of Bolivia High School, Betty was a star on her high school basketball team. Betty and her sisters were raised and worked on a farm and learned to drive at an early age from driving the tractor. She married the love of her life, Thomas Jefferson "Tommy" Calhoun on March 12, 1959 and they were married 49 wonderful years until Tommy's death in 2008. Betty and Tommy owned and operated Calhoun's House of Flowers and proudly served their community in that business for 25 years. What started as a career for Betty turned into a ministry as she used her talents in flower arranging and decorating to bless friends and family and her community, whether it was for a family wedding or decorating houses for Christmas. Betty was known to be a fabulous cook. Her family was the center of her world and she will be remembered as a beautiful and vibrant mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, and to her grandchildren, she will always be known as "Mimi." She is preceded in death by her parents, Levy Wendell Sellers & Minnie Reynolds Sellers, and her husband of 49 years, Thomas Jefferson "Tommy" Calhoun. Survived by her son, Anthony "Tony" Calhoun and wife Leanne; daughter, Virginia C. Socha and husband Steve; and John Calhoun; grandchildren, Jessica Alyssa Powlas, William Thomas Calhoun (Amy), Rebekah C. Buckley (Will). Great-grandchildren, Bailey Alyssa Beaumont, Kinsley Grace Beaumont, Melody Elizabeth Buckley, and a great-grandson on the way; She is also survived by her sisters, Gail Fussell (Elwood), and Gloria "Honey" Ashley. Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel with her son, Rev. Tony Calhoun officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Conway. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday, October 20, 2025 at the funeral home.
