Bertie Massey Obituary

Bertie Lou Chang, 94, entered eternal life after passing peacefully at her home in Myrtle Beach, SC, surrounded by family and loved ones. She was born on August 21, 1930, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Emma Leilani Paiaina and Joseph Kamai as Emmaline Niulii Paiaina. Through the traditional Hawaiian practice of hanai, Bertie was raised by her extended family member, Grace Chang, which led to her name change. Bertie married Edwin Massey in 1950 in Pearl City, Hawaii, where he was stationed at Schofield Barracks on Oahu. Known as "Aunt Betty," Bertie led a vibrant life, working at the Dole Pineapple Factory in Honolulu, as a telephone operator in Waikiki, and for a local newspaper in Wahiawa, Hawaii. She had a passion for real estate and worked as a broker in Myrtle Beach for decades. Bertie loved traveling, including a memorable trip to Israel. She also had a deep passion for musical concerts, with Elvis Presley and Tom Jones being her favorites. Bertie was preceded in death by her daughter, Noynene Kaipolani Massey. She is survived by her beloved husband of 75 years, Edwin Massey, about whom she once said, "God's been good to me from day one with 'Daddy.' He's one in a lifetime." She is also survived by two sons, Randy Massey and Edwin (Linda) Massey Jr.; her daughter, Bessie Mae (Steve) Clements Turner; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom she loved deeply. She leaves cherished memories with her extended ohana and friends. Bertie knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, attended Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church, and has entered into glory. Please join us in celebrating her life on Friday August 20, 2025, at 2:00 pm at McMillan-Small Funeral Home and Crematory, 910 67th Ave N, Myrtle Beach, SC."
