Barbara Nance Obituary

Barbara Mack Nance, 83, passed away on August 14, 2025, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, coach, teammate, and lifelong educator, Barbara's legacy is one of dedication, passion, and profound impact on the lives of countless individuals. Born on November 21, 1941, in Talladega, Alabama, Barbara's early years laid the foundation for a life devoted to learning and service. Her academic journey was marked by excellence; she graduated cum laude from Coastal Carolina University and went on to earn both her Master's and Doctorate degrees in Education from the same institution. In addition, she played on the women's tennis team during her time at Coastal Carolina. Her commitment to education was not only evident in her own achievements but also in the decades she spent shaping young minds as a teacher and mentor. Barbara's career as an educator was distinguished by numerous accolades. She was honored as Myrtle Beach High School's Teacher of the Year and received statewide recognition when she was named The South Carolina Governor's Coastal Educator of the Year in 1990. These honors reflect her tireless devotion to her students and her innovative approach to teaching. Beyond the classroom, Barbara found joy and fulfillment in athletics-particularly tennis. A passionate tennis enthusiast, she played competitively in adult leagues and served as both a player and coach. She also coached high school tennis teams with the same energy and encouragement that defined her teaching career. Whether on the court or in the classroom, Barbara inspired those around her with her determination and warmth. Barbara also loved fishing-a pastime that brought her peace and connection with nature. Her enthusiasm for life extended into every role she embraced: as a mother guiding her children through life's challenges; as a grandmother cheering from the sidelines; as a sister offering unwavering support; and as a friend whose presence brought comfort and laughter. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Christian Mack West and son-in-law Ronny West; grandchildren Jake Kurey, Becker West and Rivers West; brother Joey Dunlevy; sister Cindy Dunlevy Brittain; stepson Clay Nance; nieces Jennifer Dunlevy Duncan and Whitney Dunlevy; nephew Sean Michael Dunlevy; and former husband John Mack. Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter Buffy Mack Knight; husband Donnie W. Nance; and mother Eula Belle Dunlevy. Barbara leaves behind a legacy of compassion, excellence and inspiration. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her. A Memorial Service will be held on August 20, 2025, from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM at McMillan-Small Funeral Home 910 67th Ave N Myrtle Beach, SC. A reception to be held at Uptown Bistro, 6910 N Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.
