Thomas Myers Obituary

Thomas Ward Myers died on February 27, 2022. Born July 27, 1934, in Binghamton, New York, to Harold Myers and Frances Norris Myers, he first moved to Charleston with his family in 1940. He attended Chicora High School and graduated from Erskine College in 1956. Following graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, serving six years of active duty and retiring as a Commander in the United States Naval Reserve in 1994.

Married to Melissa McLeod Myers of Lumberton, North Carolina, in 1960, the couple lived in Southern California before returning to Charleston where he began his career in the life insurance business following his release from active duty. A longtime resident of Summerville, Mr. Myers was active in many local organizations, serving as President of Summerville's Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club and on the Board of Directors of the Bank of South Carolina, Presbyterian Homes of South Carolina, the Charleston Symphony, the Charleston Museum, the Charleston Estate Planning Council, and the American College of Life Underwriters, from which he received Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designations. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Erskine College and as an Elder of the Summerville Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife Melissa of 61 years, he is survived by a son, Thomas Ward Myers, Jr. of Bethesda, Maryland, a daughter, Amelia McLeod Myers of Charleston, and a granddaughter Isabelle Gray McCord Kilpatrick of Charleston.

A graveside service was held at the Old White Church Cemetery on Dorchester Road (adjacent to Stack's Nursery) on Friday, March 4th, at three o'clock. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Summerville Presbyterian Church, 407 S. Laurel Street, Summerville, South Carolina 29483, or to Erskine College, Advancement Office, P.O. Box 338, Due West, South Carolina 29639.

The Myers family is especially grateful for the compassionate care provided by Wanda Brown, Annette Carpenter, and Savannah Roosz.
