Roger Andrews Obituary

Roger Lee Andrews, Wise and Steadfast Family Man, Dies at 80

Roger Lee Andrews, a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was admired for his wisdom, steadfastness, kindness, and resourcefulness, died on April 10, 2023, at his home in Summerville, South Carolina. He was 80 years old. The cause was cancer, which he battled courageously for three years.

Born on November 10, 1942, in Randolph County, West Virginia, to the late Darius Edward Andrews and Opal Marjorie Tuning Andrews, Roger was a man of unwavering commitment and gentle strength. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy, including during the Cuban Missile Crisis blockade, and went on to have a distinguished career as an electrician, earning high respect for his skill and professionalism.

Roger's wisdom and resourcefulness were evident in his ability to fix almost anything. He had a reputation among his neighbors and family members as the man to call when you needed something repaired. His kindness and steadfastness were qualities that endeared him to those fortunate enough to know him. He was a dedicated family man who enjoyed fishing, cheering on the West Virginia University Mountaineer football and basketball teams, and spending time with his loved ones.

A man of faith, Roger was an active member of the Knightsville United Methodist Church, where he volunteered his time to help others. His steadfast devotion to his community was matched only by his commitment to his family.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Howard Andrews of Elkins, West Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis Marie Bentley Andrews; his daughters, Dawn Andrews Finnegan and Debby Andrews Somerville; his sons-in-law, Daniel Alan Finnegan and Robert Gray Somerville; grandchildren, Drew Somerville, Robert James Somerville, and Willa Reese Finnegan; his brother William Andrews and his sister Shirley Andrews Bowen.

A Celebration of Life Memorial for Roger will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Knightsville United Methodist Church, 1505 Central Avenue, Summerville, SC 29483. The family will receive friends for visitation at 12:30 p.m., and a reception will follow in the KUMC Fellowship Hall.

With his passing, the world has lost a wise, steadfast, and kind soul who leaves behind a legacy of love, commitment, and service. Roger's resourcefulness and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.

Though I have never met him, I have been blessed to have his daughter, Debbie, as my aunt for most of my life. Through her I have seen the echoes of his character. May grace and peace be with you in this season.
