Pickens Clayton Obituary

Pickens Leewel Clayton, 81, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026. Born on September 15, 1944, of Ridgeville, SC, Pickens lived a life defined by honor, dedication, and deep love for his family.

Pickens proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, where he rose to the distinguished rank of Sergeant Major. His military career was marked by exceptional leadership, courage, and numerous decorations honoring his service. Following his retirement from the Marines, he continued his commitment to national security as Head of Nuclear Security at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, where he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues.

Above all else, Pickens was a devoted family man. He found great joy in woodworking, creating lasting pieces with his hands, and cherished every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His strength, wisdom, and quiet kindness will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce Clayton; his sisters, Gloria Rutherford and Sandra Dougherty; and his brothers, Archie Ahl and Floyd Ahl.

He is survived by his loving sisters, Libby Strukely and Dinah Chiovaro; his son, Pickens "Butch" Clayton Jr. and wife Heather Clayton; his daughters, Shannon Cooper and Crista Adams; his grandchildren, William Clayton, Haley Clayton, Lance Cooper, Ashton Combs, and Justin Adams; and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of immense pride and joy.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 6, 2026 at 2:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 PM, at Simplicity, located at 281 Treeland Drive, Ladson, South Carolina 29456.

Pickens leaves behind a legacy of service, integrity, craftsmanship, and love. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all who had the honor of knowing him.
