Opal Howerton Obituary

The daughter of William Wesley Barton and Eula Mae Barton, Opal was born in Amarillo,
Texas on July 10, 1933, and departed this life on Wednesday October 8th, 2025, in San
Antonio, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband William Davis Howerton, of 49
years, her son Robert "Bobby" Howerton, and grandsons Alec Martinez and Christopher
Hendricks.
She is survived by her children, Sheila Schatte, and her husband Tony, Mary Borne, Billie
Jean Howerton and her husband Arlen Hauschild, Paul Howerton, Connie Hendricks and
her husband Duane, John "Johnny" Howerton and his wife Ann Marie, Brenda Malcolm,
and her husband Jimmy,17 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 9 great, great
grandchildren. Out of thirteen siblings, Opal is survived by one sister, Helen Dixon of
Amarillo, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Over the years as friends and family lost their mother's, Opal became the filler for the void
in their lives without even trying to. She had such a loving and caring heart that anyone that
met her instantly loved her.
Opal loved her family and was very proud of them. She had a love of trees and cardinals
that started an enormous collection for her over the years. She loved decorating her home
during the holidays. She had a love for churches and gospel music. She spent much of her
life raising her family. She was the strongest woman ever and never complained even to the
end. She was a great cook and passed that passion on to her family. She was a huge Spurs
fan.
Opal will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Knowing that she is in the arms of our
lord will help to bring them peace as they navigate life without her.
