Margit Beres-Paskauskas Obituary

Margit Beres was born on January 26, 1950 in Pecs, Hungary. With her first late husband, Andrew Beres, she traveled out of communist Hungary in 1971 while several months pregnant pretending to go sight-seeing in neighboring Austria. Her son, Robert Beres, better known as "Trooper Bob" on ABC News Traffic Tracker, was born in a Displaced Persons camp in Baden, Austria. Margit entered the USA in Fairfield, Connecticut on August 9, 1972. Her first movie experience in the USA was "The Sound of Music" which the family watched every year to celebrate!

Her daughter, Kristina Beres, was born in Connecticut in 1973 and grew up to become a police detective in Norwalk, Connecticut and was known as the "singing policewoman" at many a ceremony and funeral. Her mother, Margit, saved to send her daughter to piano and singing lessons. Margit Beres was a teacher's aide volunteer from 1977 at the Calvin United Church Nursery School, and she also served as the church treasurer from 1991 at the Calvin United Church of Christ in Fairfield, CT.

Margit worked from 1975 to 1994 as a skilled instrumentation assembler for the ADIT Company in Fairfield, CT. After the company closed, Margit enrolled at the Connecticut Business Institute in their Healthcare Program. She worked from 1995 as a chiropractic/physical therapist assistant in Connecticut. She also enjoyed swimming, walking, playing tennis, and cooking authentic Hungarian dishes. Her other hobbies included flower arrangements as an interior designer, having studied at the Stratford Career Institute and at Norwalk Community College.

After her first husband died in 2005, Margit moved to South Carolina to join her son who was already living in Summerville, SC. She was able to see her grandson Colt Beres and help care for him while her son Robert worked for the SC Highway Patrol. Margit bought a home in Summerville, SC and found a new job in retail sales working at the boutique stores at The Sanctuary Hotel on Kiawah Island and also at Isabella's Collections located at The Charleston Place Hotel.

While pursuing her passion for ballroom dancing she met her second husband, Raymond Paskauskas. He had arrived in 2010 from California working for Boeing and had visited Charleston Ballroom Dance, located on Ashley River Road. After one year they got engaged and were married in 2012 at Scots Kirk Presbyterian Church in Summerville, SC. Both still continued ballroom dancing many years later. Margit for nearly a decade decorated Scots Kirk Presbyterian Church with flower arrangements and supported coffee fellowships and family meals for the congregation. Margit retired from The Sanctuary Hotel in early 2020.

Margit Beres-Paskauskas is survived by her husband, Raymond Paskauskas; her son, Robert Beres; her daughter, Kristina Beres LaPak; her son-in-law Peter LaPak; her nephews, Steven Beres and Janos Bohl; her grandsons Colt Beres (granddaughter-in-law Jessica Beres) and Jaron Cash; and by three great grandchildren Noah Beres, Adalee Beres, and Charlotte Beres. Other cousins still live in Hungary. Margit was an active donor to the Pannonia American Hungarian Club, located in Fairfield, CT.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2025, from 10am to 11am at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, 303 South Main Street, Summerville, SC 29483. The memorial service will begin at 11:00am in the Chapel. A reception will be held at Summerville Country Club at 1:30PM, 400 Country Club Blvd, Summerville, SC 29483.

To the Family of Margit Beres-Paskauskas, and especially to Kristina,

I want to extend my deepest condolences on the passing of your mother, Margit. I know there are no perfect words to ease the pain of such a profound loss, but I hope you find comfort in knowing how many lives she touched and how deeply admired she was.

Margit's journey is nothing short of inspiring-her courage in leaving communist Hungary, her determination to build a life of meaning and opportunity for her family, and her lifelong commitment to service, community, and love. She led with strength, grace, and resilience, and her legacy is one that will not be forgotten.

Kristina, I remember how often you spoke of your mom and how deeply you looked up to her. Your respect, admiration, and love for her always came through in your stories. The woman you are today is a powerful reflection of who she was-strong, compassionate, and driven by purpose. I know she was incredibly proud of you.

Please know that I´m holding you and your family in my thoughts during this time of grief. Your mother´s memory lives on in every life she touched, and in the strength and kindness she instilled in her children and grandchildren.

With heartfelt sympathy and respect, Rich Arriaga

I co-hosted many special parties with Margit at the Ballroom Dance Club. She was always a pleasure to work with and had a real flair for decorating. Margit was a classy lady and will be missed.
