Joseph Gregorie Obituary

Joseph Gregorie, a devoted public servant, beloved father and grandfather, and proud son of Charleston, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 83. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Friday, July 18, 2025 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Drive, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road, James Island. The family will receive friends between 5:00 & 7:00 PM Thursday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. Born on February 15, 1942, to the late Joseph Gregorie and Mary Elizabeth Knox, Joseph dedicated his life to service - to his family, his community, and his country. He served with distinction as a firefighter for the City of Charleston from 1967 until his retirement in 1997, culminating in being named Fireman of the Year in 1997. His sense of duty extended beyond the firehouse as a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard and a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was also an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, honoring his heritage and commitment to civic unity. Joseph was a man of deep faith and unwavering strength, qualities he leaned on throughout life, especially after the loss of his beloved wife, Barbara Truesdell. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, never wavering in his dedication. His life was a testament to service, sacrifice, and the power of love and faith. He is survived by his children, Joseph Gregorie (Michelle) and John Gregorie, and cherished grandchildren: Gabrielle Melton (Michael), Mary Gregorie (Demetrius Hines), Joseph Thomas Gregorie, Sarah Gregorie, Emma Gregorie, and Abigail Gregorie. He was also blessed with one great-grandchild, Quinn Hines, who brought him immense joy. Known lovingly as Papa, Joseph found his greatest happiness in the presence of his grandchildren and great-grandchild, who will carry forward his legacy of strength, kindness, and faith. In addition to his immediate family, Joseph is also remembered with love by a large circle of extended family and dear friends, whose lives were touched by his kindness, loyalty, and quiet strength. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the friends and staff at The Oaks at Charleston and Agape Hospice for their compassion, support, and exceptional care during Joseph's final days. A man who built not only a home but a lasting example for generations to follow, Joseph Gregorie's life was one of purpose, honor, and profound love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Expressions of sympathy may include flowers and/or donations in Joseph's name to the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Building Fund or the Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team, causes close to his heart. If you plan to send flowers, we highly suggest using a local florist instead of ordering from an online vendor. Charleston has many. Kindly ask your florist to deliver between 10 AM and 2 PM Thursday to the funeral home.

God bless you Joe. Mom loved you as you did her. So glad to have you as a part of our family through the years. I know you are at peace with Barbara (Country) as we called her. What a great father to your two boys. Memories will not be forgotten. My best wishes for your loved ones. Be at peace with our Heavenly Father.

To Joe family sending love and prayers. Joe was a great friend and loved his job in the fire department. He would always be there for his firefighters bothers and always willing to talk and help others when needed. He will be missed.

After his retirement Joe would come to breakfast and luncheon for firefighters who had recently moved here or served in the local fire service. He enjoyed talking with other firefighters and would often share stories of the days of their fire service. He would laugh at them and joke about different things he encountered on the job. He will be deeply missed.
