John Winningham Obituary

John (Johnny) Waring Winningham went to his heavenly home on Saturday, October 11, 2025. He succumbed to cancer at his earthly home (as he wished) surrounded by his loving family. He had just celebrated his 88th birthday on October 6. In 1937 Johnny was the first of four siblings born to his parents, Curtis and Edna Ernestine (Sims) Winningham. He was a graduate from Berkeley High School class of 1955. He married his long time sweetheart, Luretta Mullinax, in 1959. They had two daughters, Cheryl and Lorraine. Johnny started working at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in their Apprentice Program and worked up to Planner & Estimator at his retirement in 1996. He would say that he "helped closed the shipyard down". Johnny was a man of faith. He grew up as a Southern Baptist and attended Calvary Baptist Church his whole life. There he served the Lord in multiple positions from Sunday School Teacher to Deacon to Church Trustee. He would see a need at the church and do whatever he could to resolve it without being asked. He read and studied his Bible regularly and had a very close walk with the Lord. Johnny and Luretta loved to travel and would take trips as much as they could. Some of the places they went to were Hawaii (twice), Alaska, the Grand Canyon and a cruise to the Bahamas. They enjoyed the beach and the mountains and would take frequent trips to both. Johnny was a very active person and always had a project to work on. His daughters would refer to him as the "Energizer Bunny" because he just kept going and going. He enjoyed working on lawnmowers and had quite a collection of them. He also enjoyed working with wood construction projects and was quick to offer his help to anyone that needed it. Johnny is survived by his wife of 65 years, Luretta, and his daughters, Cheryl (Norm) Revelle of Rogersville, AL and Lorraine/Rainy (Johnny) Drew of Moncks Corner, SC. He is also survived by three grandchildren who he dearly loved, Johnny (Brandi) Drew III, Alicia (Evan) King and Kyle Drew. He is also survived by two great grandchildren who he thought the world of, Brooklyn and Waylon Drew. He has three surviving brothers, Curtis/Bengie (Toni) Winningham, Philip (Anne) Winningham, and Ernest (Debra) Winningham. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. An inurnment service will be held at Mepkin Abbey on Monday, October 20, 2025 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Calvary Baptist Church, Mepkin Abbey or a charity of your choice.

I had the privilege of working with John at the Charleston Naval Shipyard as Planners and Estimators. John was one of the most pleasant men that I worked with during my career at the CNSY. I always looked forward to seeing John at our annual P & E breakfast reunions. RIP my friend.
