Just learned here in April of the death of my lifelong friend, JD, in February. Wanted to share some remembrances for Chris and his family and friends...
JD and I were not only Hanahan High classmates and teammates on the football and basketball team, but were friends away from high school, spending many hours together fishing around the lowcountry in our small wooden boats, and both of us learning to golf at the Oaks and Charleson Muni courses with Glenn and Gene. He was a good companion, dependable and always watching out for his friends; and, his practical nature and dry sense of humor made him fun to hang with. Nothing pompous or devious about him...
After he retired from his long Air Force career and returned to SC, we picked up where we left off... two friends, fishing and golfing and enjoying each other´s company. I easily identified with John´s second career as a Sears repairman having grown up in my dad´s tv and appliance business in North Charleson. We had fun comparing notes on the challenges and rewards of a repairman, including the increasing complexities, and especially being able to help people which he relished. On one trip down to visit him and Chris, the two of us rode around our old stomping grounds reminiscing; and, he surprised me by arranging for visits with Danny and Earl, two of our high school friends I had not seen since graduation. That showed his appreciation of the people in his life, such as he also showed helping to organize an early sixties Hanahan High reunion and helping out with a 40th reunion of our 1965 class (that we of course invited the other year graduates to). And we were sure to fill his freezer with fish each trip for his neighborhood cookouts. All examples of his outreach to friends...
I will miss John, but will take solace with the best epitath I can give him - John lived with gusto and embraced the people in his life for his nearly 75 years! May he Rest in Peace.

Chris and family, Mary and I are so sorry to hear about JDs passing. We just found out about it this morning in the Summerville paper. Our thoughts are with you during this tragic time. If there is anything we can do, please let us know.
