James Nolen Obituary

James Carroll Nolen (Jim), 91 of Charleston, passed away on June 4, 2025, after a brief illness.
Jim was born in Spartanburg, SC, on June 20, 1933, to Fred D Nolen and Gladys Smith Nolen.
Jim was preceded in death by his brother Fred and sister Clara, two of his sons, James Jr. and Charles, and his granddaughter, Nicole. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Betty; his son, Mike (Pam); his daughter, Pamela; and his daughter-in-law, Debbie. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Jimmy III (Marcia), Ian (Tabitha), Erin, Devan (Bobby), Michael II, and April. Additionally, he leaves behind eight great-grandchildren: Cammy, Robby, Hayden, Brooklyn, Kendall, Jaxson, Maddie, and Rosie.
Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served honorably during the Korean War. He also served 12 years as a missile technician in the Air Force Reserve. Jim retired from the Charleston Water System in 1995.
Jim worked for various companies throughout his life but was most proud of his time with Boeing. At Boeing, he contributed to the development of the Saturn V rocket, which ultimately transported American astronauts to the moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
