Carol Dailey Obituary

Carol Jean Hammer Dailey, 88, of Summerville, SC, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025. She was born June 7, 1937, in Santa Clara, California, to the late Glen Forest Hammer and Opal Fern Erickson Hammer.

On July 3, 1964, she married the love of her life, John Patrick Dailey. As a devoted military wife, Carol supported her husband and family with grace and resilience as they moved across the country and lived in Greece during John's Air Force career, finally settling in Summerville, SC.

In her younger days, she was a strong, adventurous woman- even competing as a demolition derby driver. Her strength and determination carried her through multiple battles with cancer and other health challenges. Carol retired from Wal-Mart in 2005 and spent her remaining years surrounded by loved ones. She was a faithful member of the 2nd Ward Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Carol was a fierce Canasta player who also loved Bingo and other card games. Her grandchildren fondly remember her unconditional love, her Christmas cookies, and her famous butter noodles. Being a grandmother and great-grandmother was one of her greatest joys.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Patrick Dailey; children, Robert Dean and John Glenn Dailey, and Walter R. and Daniel J. Castleberry; siblings, Robert, Ellen, and Forest "Jerry" Hammer, and Dianna L. Taylor.

Carol is survived by her son, Matthew Ray (Melissa) of Dauphin Island, AL; daughter, Valarie Lynne of Summerville, SC; daughter-in-law, Julie Todd (John) of Summerville, SC; brothers, Donald Hammer (Jeanne) of Antioch, CA, and Walter "Jim" Hammer (Melissa) of Brentwood, CA; grandchildren, Rhyen (Crystal), Michael (Sara), Madilyn (Ryan), Morgan (Mason), John Davis, Connor, and Grayson; and great-grandchildren Colin, Lucas, Anna, Brycen, and Jackson.

Her life was a testament to kindness, resilience, and love. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, and many cherished memories.

Graveside Services were held on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 2:30 pm at Summerville Cemetery, 1300 Boone Hill Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of my aunt Carol. She was married to my uncle Jack, who was my mother's brother. All of them are in heaven together now. I remember aunt Carol being a very compassionate and loving person who was always kind to me and was a great canasta player. We went to their house from Florida almost every summer and enjoyed many dinners. Many talks and always playing cards. Aunt Carol will be missed and even though I haven't seen her in years her presence in the world will definitely be noticed. Her kindness and gentle heart are one of a kind. Rest in peace, aunt Carol.

I met Carol when I was a sophomore in high school after I became friends with her son Matt. She was like a second mother to me. She treated me like I was her fourth son. She would feed me after I dropped Matt from school. Those who have enjoyed Mama's cooking know that I couldn't pass that up. Words can't explain how much love was between us. She introduced me to the Southern hospitality, sweet tea, and Southern phases like "Bless his heart!" Or "That's right. " Every time I went back home to Summerville or North Myrtle Beach and didn't stop by to visit, I would be in trouble. She was there for me when my stepfather passed away or when we talked about my ex filing for divorce. I used to call her every birthday or Mother's Day because God put her in my life to be there for me, and for that, I will be forever grateful. I miss you, Mama. Love your fourth son, Jeff
